Flat Screen TV Mount

We have a flat screen TV and do not currently have it mounted to the wall. For anyone who had it done:

How much did it cost? Who installed it for you? Where the heck do the cable box and DVD player go?

Thank you!

Jenn

Re: Flat Screen TV Mount

We mounted our flat screen on the wall in my basement. MY DH installed it himself. He actually snaked the wires through the wall and up the drop ceiling into a closet. The best part is that you don't see any wires and we have a special battery in our remote that sends a signal to the cable box that's hidden in the closet. Our DVD player is also hidden in the closet as well. I luv when people come over and say how are you changing the channel, where's the cable box!!

I have my plasma mounted on the wall. I bought a mount at Bestbuy. It's made by Sanus,

Website

It's very easy to do. It requires heavy duty lag bolts (comes with the wall mount) that screw into a bracket which mounts to the wall. The lag bolts must screw into studs. Use a stud finder to locate the studs in the wall. It must be level so you'll need a leveler as well. Once the bracket is mounted to the wall there are monitor brackets that come with the mounting system that get screwed into the rear of the TV. The monitor bracket has hooks that attach to the mounting bracket hung on the wall. You'll require two people to lift the TV when mounting it to the bracket on the wall.

Here's the bracket I purchased. On the site you can lookup your TV brand to determine which bracket to buy. Better instructions included. Chat Icon

VisionMount

I've attached a pic of my Panasonic 50" Plasma TV mounted to the wall.

As far as where to store the other components, you can do what Buttafli1277's DH did providing you have a closet or nook near by. In my case I didn't have this so I purchased a cabinet to store my components as you can see in the picture. The wires are hidden behind a wire hider which a painted the same color as the wall.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Re: Flat Screen TV Mount

we are in the process of moving our plasma from a stand in the living room to a wall mount in the basement. we have a small closet down there that will house all of the dvd and cable box etc.
fortunately for me my sisters boyfriend does this for a living so he wired our basement before al lthe new sheetrock was put up
but all the wires were run thru the ceiling and walls and into the closet.

i will let you know how it turns out- im hoping to have the tv up in the next few weeks

I know that Best Buy will come to your home and install the mount for you if you buy it from them. I think they charge ~ $100 - $150? I bought it from them but DH is going to try to install it. I am scared though b/c he isn't handy at ALL Chat Icon

Re: Flat Screen TV Mount

its an easy process.. keep in mind, elctric power cords shouldn't be wired though the wall. (can void your home owners warranty) Normally an outlet is installed behind the tv

as long as you find the studs and drill/screw correctly (middle and not the end) you are fine

we have plamsa on wall in living room and lcd in the bedroom.

bestbuy overcharges everything btw...

I agree. BestBuy does overcharge. Mounting the TV is easier than it sounds.

Re: Flat Screen TV Mount

Thank you all! Jerome your TV looks great. My husband is pretty handy and I am confident he could do this, however, we have a small closet on the same wall as the TV and I would like to put the boxes in there. I am unsure if we should run the wires through the wall, or just have a set up like jerome's. If we do it like jerome (see you are like a star now!) I guess my husband will do it himself.

THanks again for your suggestions and help!

Thanks!

I'm not aware of any hazards when running wires inside the walls. Contractors do this all the time however they tack it to the studs. One can only do this during construction of a home since sheetrock isn't up yet. I wouldn't install the actual outlet behind the wall. That sounds dangerous. If you have a closet I would install the outlet in the closet and run power cords and component wires behind the wall into the closet.

Or, you can do what I did and run the wires through a wire hider painted the same color as the wall. If you look closely at my pic beneath the TV you can see the plastic wire hider. Also look to the right of the cabinet between it and the right speaker. I ran cable hiders to the speakers. In this pic they are white but have since been painted the same color as the wall. There are also speakers in the rear that you can’t see in this pic where I also ran cable within a wire hider along the baseboards. The wire hider can be purchased at Home Depot.

If your DH can use a power drill, leveler and find the studs in the wall he can complete the job without a problem. Good luck!

I never heard of it being a fire hazard either. My outley is actually in my closet where all the wires run to.

Wires are fine...its the electrical wire that is the harzard..(last place you want a cable to start flaming is inside a wall)

Check with your insurance comapny...they will tell you the same thing. Wiring inside of walls are different then things we plug into an outlet.

Typically, you will install an outlet directly behind the tv.
