Spring Hill Nursery Question

Silly question but....

Anyone ever order thier Foundation Shade Garden. I am thinking about it and wondering what it looks like. How do they come? How long will it take for it to look like something.... like will it not look like anything until next year.... Never ordered from anything like this...

Re: Spring Hill Nursery Question

i just ordered from them about 3 weeks ago....

when you order you get little tiny sprouts... i idid cancel my order and they told me to keep them anyway after the credited my card. I expected at least a 2" pot of each plant but i mean sprouts in dirt!! thats it.. like 2mm high. they have grown since i planted them and seem to be good quality but i would think ii would take about a year to 2 to really get a big garden out of what they send you...

Re: Spring Hill Nursery Question

I just ordered from them today, but I ordered shrubs, roses, lilacs and azaleas, they told me they would be about 18" high and it would take a year for them to flower. I'm fine with that.

I got an order from them a week ago, I didn't get any tiny little sprouts. They were the size stated in the description or bigger, most in 3" pots. Only 2 were damaged in shipping, they are sending new ones (and I planted the old anyway just to see what'll happen).

and others....

I took a look at the shade garden you are talking about and I would call and ask about each plant. They are all excellent for shade, but I know for example I planted several Astilbe's 2 years ago (NOT from Springhill) and I am only seeing them come up now! SO some plants need to get established and some just hit the ground running. Hosta's will get bigger and better every year.

Re: Spring Hill Nursery Question

Most of the catalogs and sites send small plants, rootlings or very young plants. This is why the prices are so low. If you don't mind waiting a year or so for it to fill in it is worth it.

I ordered a "dynamic shade garden" from dutch gardens. The plants were all very healthy when they arrived, but small. I planted them in early April, and fertilized, mulched and have made sure they have gotten plenty of water. It's been easy with all this rain, I only needed to water a few times. My plants have since doubled in size, a few even more, the rootlings are all growing well. Not all will flower this year. It looks really cute to see all the "baby plants" in the front of the house. I look forward to next year and especially 2 years when they are really established. I think I paid about 1/4 to 1/3 of what I would have if I bought established plants. If you are willing to wait it's a good way to go.

I also planted bulbs in the area and I'm planting an annual boreder just to add some interest this year.
