Question about bar/bat mizvah

DH and I were invited to a bat mizvah for the daughter of a friend DH works with. I haven't been to one since I was 13 and my friends were having them.

What do you wear? Long dress/short dress? What do I give? If money, do you give the same amount as you would a couple getting married (the celebration is at a reception hall)? I wanted to get her jewelry from Tiffany's that she would have forever, but DH wants to give cash--do people give gifts instead of cash? We've never met the girl, but I want to do whatever is appropriate.

Is the party at night? Evening? I would dress according to the location & time of the party. I would def. be happy w/ Tiffany stuff. I'm the type of person that likes to give "persona" gifts rather than money or checks.

I have worn what I would wear to an afternoon wedding.

As far as the gift, we gave money. I think that if money is given in intervals of $18.00 it's suppose to mean luck - so that is what we did.

Thanks, it's a night party (well, starting at around 4, 4:30 after the temple).

Re: Question about bar/bat mizvah

At my bat mitzvah a family friend bought me a Tiffany necklace and I LOVED it. Usually, if you bring money or a bond, the kid doesn't get access to it for years, so it's nice to get a few gifts that she/he can enjoy now in celebration of the day...

Thanks, that's what I was thinking! Plus, it's classic and something she can still use as an adult. Chat Icon

Re: Question about bar/bat mizvah

I love all of my pieces from tiffany that I got at my bat mitzvah. I still wear them. I would either go with something from there or the bond. And yes, multiples of 18 are appropriate, as chai, or 18, means luck.
