probably a stupid question...

when you buy a house and move in, do you just take the keys and start living there? or, do you change the locks?

my guess would be to change the locks b/c it isn't expensive to do.

what did or will you do?

Re: probably a stupid question...

you should definitely change the locks ASAP. you never knew who the old owners gave a key to.

We changed all of the locks. You never know who has a copy of the keys.

Re: probably a stupid question...

Along the same lines, did anyone's house have an automatic garage door opener? If so, what did you do about that? I am just nervous because I know that a lot of cars have the feature that you can configure the garage door opener to a button in the car. If that is the case, those people could still get into your house even after turning over the garage door openers. Does anyone know how what to do about this?

Re: probably a stupid question...

one of the programs with our realtor was lock changing and so they rekeyed both locks on the front door to match and they also rekeyed the back door and we got 3 sets of keys for $70. HTH

Re: probably a stupid question...

We changed all the locks with Schlage locks.

We also changed all the door knobs with matching knobs, since we changed every door in the house except the boiler door

If you plan on living there right away change the locks.

We didn't as we had 4 months of construction going on and my general contractor and FIL had a key. As time went on we had several subs so we just gave them keys before the appliances and cabinets arrived.

We are changing the locks the day we move in. Security system will also be installed on that day.

We changed all the locks once we moved in. Before we moved in, we had a lot of work going on, and it was great because I would just give a copy of the key to anyone because I knew I would be changing them.

This is usually the best way to do it. No sense changing the locks the day you close if you don't plan on occupying the house right away.

We changed the locks right away and changed the code for the garage door. We also have ADT.

Re: probably a stupid question...

We changed the locks ourselves, upgraded from quickset and slage to emtek and added some deadbolts.

Quoted $1200 from locksmith, cost $400 for all the locks and knobs and 1 weekend of work to do it ourselves.

Re: probably a stupid question...

i'm glad i asked - it is something i wasnt even thinking about... but like it was said above with the whole construction, maybe not moving in right away - changing the locks after makes sense!

thanks! Chat Icon
