DWI crash kills female NYPD

An off-duty, female New York City police officer was killed and another off-duty female officer in the car was arrested for drunk driving in a single-car car accident Friday morning on Sunrise Highway, a Nassau County police spokesman said.

The operator of the vehicle, Danielle Baymack, 22, and passenger Marlene Rivera, 24, were assigned to the 103rd Precinct in the Jamaica section of Queens, the spokesman, Lt. Kevin Smith, said.

According to detectives, a 2000 Mitsubishi sedan traveling west on Sunrise Highway approaching the Wantagh Parkway overpass, left the roadway, hit a light pole and sign stanchion.

Rivera was transported to Nassau University Medical Center and was pronounced dead at 5:00 a.m. by hospital staff.

The westbound lanes were closed during the morning rush hour and eastbound motorists slowed to look at the silver sedan which sat crumpled against the guard rail.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident, Smith said.

Baymack has been arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated.

Investigators have not determined where the officers were before the accident, Smith said.

I work in Seaford and saw how backed up Sunrise was and then Merrick rd. I knew it was an accident

My BIL works in the 103. Im sure he will be attending the funeral.

I don't understand why people drink and drive, it is such carelessness. Take a cab or drink responsibly. I feel like you hear it more and more in the papers lately. I think people think they are invisible.

I heard it this mornign on the radio and took a different way to work.

The pics of the car are pretty bad.
