NY Times article re: link between acne and food
Short but interesting....
By ANAHAD O’CONNOR Published: July 11, 2006 THE FACTS Despite what parents everywhere have long insisted, most people know by now that chocolate and greasy foods will not cause acne. But can other foods?
High School Dietary Dairy Intake and Teenage Acne (The Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology)According to dermatologists, what largely determines whether a person develops acne are genetics and hormonal fluctuations, hence the tendency for it to occur during puberty, pregnancy and menopause.
But recent studies have pointed to one or two exceptions, most notably dairy products. One of the largest studies to demonstrate this was published last year in The Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology by a team at Harvard.
The researchers analyzed the habits and diets of nearly 50,000 people, looking especially at what they ate while in high school.
Those who drank three or more cups of milk a day, the researchers found, were 22 percent more likely to experience severe acne compared with those who drank one serving a week or less.
Skim milk had the greatest effect. Cream cheese and cottage cheese were also associated with outbreaks, while chocolate and greasy foods were not. The researchers attributed the effect to hormones in milk; other studies have had similar findings.
Dr. Diane S. Berson, an assistant professor of dermatology at Weill Medical College of Cornell University, said foods that contain iodides, like shellfish and soy sauce, might also exacerbate acne. Iodides are thought to play a role in inflammation.
THE BOTTOM LINE Certain foods, in particular dairy products, have been shown to exacerbate acne.

I believe it. Dairy is an inflammatory food. I had a nutritionist tell me something that made me think. He said milk is really for baby cows..not for humans.

very interesting.
although milk is supposed to help you lose weight. so, i guess the choices are: be fat and have clear skin or be skinny with acne

I always drank milk as a teenager...tons of it. Maybe that's why my skin was bad back then...

I think that's definitely better!
Melissa, I have to tell you - I used to drink TONS of skim milk and since giving up dairy, my skin is 100% better - even before my period. I'm just careful to get my calcium from other foods/supplements.

While I'm a vegetarian, soy protein in excess does it for me!

interesting - one of my best friends is the biggest milk drinker I know and she has ALWAYS had clear skin.... soo I'm not totally convinced - also they did say 22%, not really the biggest number.

It depends on your body - my dermatologist gave me a list of foods to avoid, they included:
Dairy Shellfish Chocolate Taco Bell Nuts Caramel Colored Soda
Acne can be triggered by certain foods, like an allergic reaction.
If I eat too many nuts, my face breaks out.

the dairy industry has that whole "3 servings in 24 hour" campaign going on right now. We can't win!!
