Home Alarm Systems
Does anyone have them? If so can you tell me what they cost around?
With all the home invasions on the island i am trying to convince DH that we need one.

We use Lowitt Alarms. I'm not sure what the installation was, the previous owners installed it, but I think we pay about $30 or $35 a month for central station monitoring. We have 4 doors, 1 motion sensor, 3 fire alarms, 1 panic button, a siren, and about 20 windows alarmed.

We use Slomins. It's about $35 a month and that includes the maintenance should something need repair.

We use Protection One. They are great. Not sure how much the system cost. but we pay 29.95 a month.
We signed with Slomins and canceled when we found out we needed to sign a 5 year contract.And that they put a lien on your house.

The guy from slomins also told us that we didnt need a fire alarm "he was saving us money"  I find it amusing he tells us what we need and what we dont need. The protection one guy said thats the most important thing to have. Since fires happen mostly at night and I was thinking what about when we are away and god forbid there was a fire who's gonna call?

Another reason to get the fire alarm....Before we bought the house from my ILs, the toilet tank in the upstairs bathroom cracked and water was leaking non stop. It leaked into the walls and got into the fire alarm and set it off. The fire department responded, broke in, found the problem and turned off the water and took towels out of the linen closet to sop up the standing water. This was like 11am. ILs wouldn't have found it until about 7pm when they got home from work, and the damage would have been WAY worse.

Actually that happaned to my parents but they didnt have an alarm so the water RAN ALLLL DAY LONG. Everything on the first floor was ruined all the carpeting. Kitchen Table Kitchen Cabinets warped and the water peeled the finish off.
Your story is a great reason to have one... and mine is saying you defiently HAVE ONE the renovations on the house cost over 30,000.00

We have ADT. In addition to the security, we have a smoke detector on every floor (including basement) and Radon detector. It's about $30/month.

I'll have to look tonight when I get home because it was a couple of years ago. We had them at our old condo and we had them install a new system when we moved into our new home. We had a wireless system put in. I think it's overall less money, because we only need door sensors and motion detectors. I'm thinking it was around $500 - perhaps less if we agreed to a couple year contract.

My question is - (sorry to butt in here OP) we are going to get one of the wireless 'do it yourself' alarm systems; you just install the sensors, and then activate it and they monitor it remotely.
Shouldnt you get a door sensor and window sensor for each door/window??? Doing that, we figured it out to be 1,000 for just parts, and my house doesnt have excessive windows.
And does the window sensors really matter, considering on the ground floor all they can do is break the glass and not open the window?

Im not following you? Are you asking if you should have window sensors or not?
We have window sensors on all of thewindows. And door sensors on everydoor.
I understand what you are saying about the windows on the first floor being broken and stuff but... Thats why we got motion sensors also.

I don't know if my question is more of a question, or just a frustration... LOL
Putting window sensors on all windows won't secure windows because they can just break the glass. Best case scenario is to get glass break sensors on all the windows, but those are quite expensive. (I have 18 windows on my first floor, plus 5 basement windows.)
Motion detectors won't work well in my opinion, as what would happen when you get up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom, the alarm will go off (or large pets walking around also), so you could only use motion detectors when you are out of the house, and not overnight. (or possibly install another keypad in all bedrooms so if you get up you can disarm the alarm before you leave the room.
I'd hate to comprimise and leave the house half secured at night, when that would be the worst time to be invaded; when we were home.

I have 24 windows, so getting a wireless sensor for each window was a little expensive. Thus, we opted for the door sensors (5) and 6 motions.

-L- Didnt read the paper 16 times ONLY KIDDING!!!!! 
But it says it in very fine print on the back of the paper that it is a 5 year contract and they put a lien on your house.
