My Neighbor is Section 8 & Buying A House

Okay so let's see how this story starts...

I currently live in a pretty crappy section of Queens, Ozone Park and the crappier section of that. My dh and I moved in about 3 years ago from Flushing for the much much cheaper rent so we can save. We stick out like a sore thumb and we've had trouble in this neighborhood. (the car window's been broken 3 times since we've been here, someone broke into our car for a half a roll of quarters, my dh almost got jumped etc. But we stayed and weathered it here for the CHEAP rent. Basically we've worked so hard to pay debt, save etc to buy a house.

ANYHOW....It's really about these people...
There's these people that I know here through someone else. They are section 8, (so free rent, a whole house!Chat Icon ) they get wic for -their kids (so free food and medical) and her husband works 2 days a week but it's off the books, and oh of course their food stamp card for more groceries. I never really even cared about them or their existence until I hear today....

That they are buying a house in the same neighborhood pretty much that I am going to be living in (one town over but same price for homes)@!!! Chat Icon

I mean how could they!!!...Chat Icon
And so what have I been doing all my life? Why do I even bother paying taxes, or working on the books? Or paying $10,000+ a year for health care! Chat Icon

AND JUST THINK:
-These are the people who will "qualify" for the grants they give for people of low income for home buying
-They can and will still get wic for their kids so free food
-And they work off the books so when they get old they will qualify for some other aid
-Qualify for food stamps again due to low income even though they would OWN a house

Why, oh why? Oh yes I am player hating b/c if I could I probably would too. But since I can't OOOHHHHH it gets me so heated. Want to go break their window or something. Not that it matters, it's not even their house!! Chat Icon

I'm having a bad week so I'd be totally heated too, but in reality you've got to try to remember they are cheating the system and sometimes those people get caught.
Here's a little story about something similar happening in my life-
My DH is a carpenter for 20+ years, he is currently working in the wealthiest areas of the hamptons. Last week he was in a 30,000 square foot home Chat Icon with about 50 other workers from various trades & companies. 99% of them are costa rican and flat out tell everyone THEY ARE NOT CITIZINS, no working card, expired visas & it is totally illegal for them to be earning money here (they are all really nice guys though-I really have no problem w/them) BUT here's what pisses my DH off. One guy is 28 yrs old, he has thousands of dollars of super high end power tools, he has a BRAND new work van, then on the weekend he drives a macked out brand new diesal dualie pick up, he has two jet skis, a kayak, a Bose surround sound in his apartment, and the list goes on & on. Oh & 1/2 the guys have just as much krap as him.
My Dh is driving his 5 year old Ram over a hundred miles a day & he only buys new tools when needed, we have a mortgage & children & we get KILLED with taxes.
This guy is living like a rock star, while we bust our a$$es to live modestly BUT
everyday he's worried he'll get pulled over, or in trouble, deported, whatever. He has NO FREEDOM, he can't go back to costa rica to visit because he'll never get back in the US.
So my VERY long point is the grass sometimes looks greener, but look at those neighbors of yours-would you be proud of your DH if he was a lazy sack that only worked two days a week & let the state feed his children? Do you think they will take pride in there new home or treat it like junk because it came easy?
I wouldn't want to be them & I wouldn't want to be the guy in the hamptons either.
Cheer up, keep working hard, all your effort WILL pay off.

Me too! Some aspects of this country drive me bonkers. I have a huge problem with the abuse of Welfare, Workmans Comp and the uncontrollable amount of suing that goes on in this country. Chat Icon

I know exactly what you are feeling. I'm in the process of my selling my house in Forest Hills/Rego Park. My neighborhood has taken a turn for the worse and I can't wait to get out.

In any case, I had offers on my home in the low 800K. The people that plan to buy my house are going to mostly likely knock it down and rebuild a 3 family home. My house is immaculate and completely renovated. I know for fact that the people who are buying my home have Medicaid and Foodstamps. They all work cash jobs and offer to pay the down payment (half) in cash. And their parents who never worked a day in this country collect Social Security.

I'm going to stop myself from rambling before I say something I might regret.Chat Icon

I could go on and on about the abuse of section 8.....it is absolutely ridiculous that it is not regulated better.

Honestly, I work in the affordable housing industry and my company has such a hard time obtaining vouchers for people to become tenants in our building, there is a waiting list for Section 8 right now and now they are turning people away, b/c they don't have any vouchers to give out. I would call and report this family. Section 8 is regulated by HUD and takes this abuse EXTREMELY unacceptable. They will probably send an inspector over and revoke the vouchers and make them pay what they owe, or arrest them!

I hate people who work the system Chat Icon

I have a friend who used to do that when she lived in NY. she got free healthcare for her 3 kids because she lied and told them that she was divorced and was out of work. Chat Icon

Do you have a number? Not that it matters too much. If not them, they'll be someone else. I see so much of that in my neighborhood now.... Who do you start reporting first?

See this is what I am talking about! How do they buy the house and practically cash??? They'll probably get a no income verification check loan...but then don't this send a red flag to the government especially b/c they are on medicaid and the foodstamp card and whatever else?

I just don't understand how people get away with it....Chat Icon

I was just going to say- report them anonmously- I have parents of one my student who actually told me they are having friends stay with them in their section 8 apartment to get the extra cash, like I am going to condon it or something. I have turned them in. Such abuse is sooo wrong!

unfortunates they don't really take is as seriously as they should. It seems that it is almost impossible to kick someone off of the program once they are on. It seems as if they don't want to be bothered. That is just my experience with Mineola and north hempstead section 8. Chat Icon Chat Icon
