RTF formula vs. Powdered Formula - I finally did the math...

OK I finally did the math to see how much more expensive it was to use RTF formula...

Katie has seven 5oz. bottles each day, here's the price breakdown (I know someone was recently asking about this):

******Powdered formula***** (Similac Alimentun) $24.49/can of powder.
Makes approx. 23 5oz. bottles
Works out to be approx $1.06 per bottle and $7.42 per day.

*****RTF Formula*****(also Similac Alimentum $8.49/per container:
Makes approx. 6 5oz. bottles
Works out to be approx $1.41 per bottle and $9.87 per day.

So it's .35 cents more per bottle for the RTF formula and that is about $2.45/day...which doesn't seem too bad but when you calculate that cost for the year, it's $894.25 more per year you're spending on formula. Too much for me!

Note: Katie drinks Alimentum, which is more expensive than regular Similac...but you get the general idea. Hope this helps some people!

I kinda figured that the powder was cheaper in the long run, but Jacob just didnt like it. I found it to be a tad bit more watery than RTF and he was just too hungry too often. Plus i am lazy, and dont feel like mixing it. Chat Icon Thanks for the breakdown though, it is truly amazing what you will spend in the first year on formula. Esp in the beginning when i was buying Nutramigen at $9.00 a can before my ins co covered it!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Highway robbery!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

I just have to say that I think its amazing how much you pay for formula in the states, I buy a big tin of SMA Gold Formula and it costs £5.98, so thats around $9, it's 900 grams...

It lasts me about a week..

Hi! Thank you so much for figuring this out. (I was the one who posted about this last week!) I use RTF and find it to be very convenient - kinda lazy and dont feel like boiling the water to sterilize and mixing it all upChat Icon BUT that is a lot of extra $$ in a years time! If I look at it like .35 a bottle its not so bad but in a year - I could buy a lot of things with that! I amy have to rethink the RTF ....

***any tips on making powdered formula use not such a PITA???

I use bottled water - I buy a gallon sized bottle of Poland Spring which is $1.49 and sometimes on sale for .99 cents. I can't imagine boiling water...making the bottles and cleaning the bottle (Dr Browns) is enough work LOL
