Sippy cups?

How old were your babies when you started sippy cups?

Emily practically grabs our cups out of our hands. Maybe she's just curious but she's definately showing interest in it.

Also what did you start giving in the sippy cup first? Plain water? Water with a tiny bit of juice?

Can you recommend the "perfect" sippy cup??

Re: Sippy cups?

We just started about 2 weeks ago. We use the playtex one with the handles. He loves to drink from it (also loves to drink from a regular cup - with us holding it of course) but he doesn't get that he has to tilt his head back yetChat Icon . We are just giving him water as of now (7 mos on Wed).Playtex Sippy Cup

I started Andrew on a sippy at 6 months, but it took him awhile to figure out how to use it. We just did water in it at first. He was exclusively breastfed, so he needed a little time to figure it out!

Here's the one we started with and I loved them! Soft silicone top and spill-proof, until they learn how to press on it to make it come out Chat Icon

I started Ava on a sippy cup about a month ago. We just give her water in it. I use the Gerber ones.

Re: Sippy cups?

I think both my kids started around 9 months and transitioned pretty easily from the bottle to them. We use the Gerber or Playtex ones, I never had a preference either way. Playtex has come insulated ones which keep the drink cold or warm longer which I always liked.

I bought these as well - I hear they are good. I have been teaching Talia to drink from a glass - when she gets a little better at it - then I will give her the sippy cup.

Re: Sippy cups?

We have the Gerber one also, but Nate just bangs it against the highchair table. He actually prefers to drink out of a straw.

ETA: We started at 6 months a few times a week with water and a little apple juice.

Re: Sippy cups?

We have the Gerber one too. Jared still doesn't get it yet...he'd rather drink out of my cup.

We have the gerber and the advent and I've just been putting water in it since he's 5 months. He wants no part of it...I haven't really been pushing it too much - he does like our cups but for now I just want him to like the bottle!Chat Icon

How do you know they are ready for it? Both of my boys don't even hold thier own bottle yet. Well Joey has a few times, but only for a few ounces, he doesn't realize you have to hold it higher as you drink some of it.

We used these are first also. We introduced the cup around 4 months and she was a master at it by about 6 or 7 months.

Re: Sippy cups?

I first tried the Gerber one at around 5 months, just to introduce it. Then seriously began trying at around 7 mos. I also tried the Take n Toss kind which he does a little better with. I only put water in them. I tried formula once or twice and he freaked. He's still not quite getting it. He thinks the Gerber one is a teething toy... all he does is munch on it because he likes the squeaky sound it makes when he rubs his gums on it! Chat Icon

We use the Nuby Grip and Sip cups. So far so good. These cups have a little straw that pops up. We tried others but these seem to work the best for my son. He is almost 1.

Re: Sippy cups?

At 5-6 months, my dr recommended giving Kevin a sippy cup and letting him learn and play. I only used water in it until he was much older. When they start using it at first they love to play. He took to it right away as far as putting it to his mouth and trying to drink but took longer to get the right angle to really drink.
