Smart Girl award goes to...
my best friend.
She is a single mom, living in Centerport in a pretty secluded area. Her house has an almost vertical driveway. On Monday at 5:30am, a guy knocked on her door & asked to use her phone because he was "locked out". She was barely awake & didn't hear him, so she asked him to repeat it. He then said "I got locked out of my friend's car and need to call him. If you want maybe you can dial the phone for me." He sounded a bit drunk. So she DOESN'T open the door and gets her phone, dials the 702 area code he gives her - it was a wrong number, then he gives her another number to call & someone picks up & says it's the wrong number. By then her 5 year old woke up, so she said "Just walk up to the stores & use the pay phone there."
Afterwards she was thinking about it & decided to call the police. She explains the situation but adds he sounds a bit drunk but probably needs help getting in his car. Two cop cars show up, 4 officers get out. They question her & say "Be very glad you didn't open the door." She said 'ok, why? what did they do?" Her 5 year old was standing there, so the cop replied "They are just very bad men."
Later on she called the police station & was told a neighbor called bc they saw some men going in & out of another neighbor's house. They had their vehicle & a wallet with a Vegas address, but were on the look out for the men. They suspect that they saw the cop car & were looking for a place to wait it out OR they actually got locked out of their car while robbing the neighbor.
Before I heard this I probably would have opened my door

I would NEVER EVER have opened the door, and infact, I would have told him I was dialing while actually calling the police. Thank god she stayed inside!
