Let's talk fish...

When is it OK to start introducing fish to the baby's diet? My what to expect the first year says it's OK by 9 months but we haven't done it yet because I'm nervous about it.

I won't even try shellfish for a while, but what about regular fish? We are having Tilapia for dinner and I'm wondering if it is OK to let her try it.

I tried fish sticks around 12 months-Jenna hated them-I think she thought they were going to taste like chicken nuggets. I have tried some flounder, tilapia, and cod here and there but she still isn't interested. DH isn't a big fish eater so I don't make it that often anyway.

You must have read my mind....I was just going to post this. I read the same thing as you but haven't given her any yet only because I was afraid she would be allergic. I'm sure Ava would like it and it's healthy but I'm just a worry wort. Let me know how it goes tonight.

Re: Let's talk fish...

Because DH and I don't eat meat and avoid dairy, fish has become the staple of our diet... we asked our pediatrician about it and he gave us the OK to start feeding it to Alex, but only the fishies low in mercury (check out the EPA website for a list). In fact, last night I made some broiled Tilapia and sweet potatoes and Alex gobbled them up... she loved it!

My ped had told me WHITE fish was OK to start at 9 months. So far my daughter has had flounder, cod, scrod, grouper, tilapia and snapper. She actually loves fish (very surprising, since DH and I are not big fish eaters).

I will definately hold off on shellfish for a while because of the high allergy.

Julia has had crab cakes, tilapia, fish sticks, shrimp, shes never had a reaction from them, and she loves it. I'm glad too since its so healthy for her. She has been eating fish since 11 months.
