What do they actually do at a non-stress test

They've told me that I have to start coming in 2x per week and that on Thursday they'll do a non-stress test on the baby. I should've asked while I was there, but I didn't. What does this test consist of? Will they do a sonogram as well?

With Caiden I had one done, and for me all it was, was me hooked up to a machine that measured the babies heartrate and to see if I was having contractions and if so, how the baby was handling them. It was something on my finger I think, and a belt wrapped around my belly. I didn't get a sonogram.

oh good. that's a bit of a relief. I'm glad the test will show if I'm contracting b/c I've actually started to wonder if there was an idiot proof test for whether I'm contracting or not b/c at this point I've got this phobia like what if it's happening and I don't know it, though I realize that's highly unlikely, if not downright impossible.

They put me on a monitor on my belly to see if I was having contractions and they put a monitor also on my belly to keep track of her heartbeat.

I dont' think it's impossible. My grandmother said that she never felt contractions with my dad and she went for her check up and he was on his way out

She said she didn't feel a thing and by the time she got the hospital, he was crowing already. Then, she felt it

Make sure you bring a cold water bottle with you, your pillow and a magazine/book.
Drink the cold water..it tends to wake the baby up and get a good reading. Lay on your left side over your right side.

It is just you laying there..bored.

I think they gave you a good description of a non-stress test - but I wanted to add one visit I sat there feeling bad thinking the baby was asleep since I never had to press the button. Wound up my dr reviewed the chart and I was contrtacting every 5 minutes and the dr sent me right to L&D. I was only 30something weeks - luckily after a few hours things calmed down - but after that I recognized contractions !!! I felt dumb because I didn't feel them until they were pointed out to me.

but don't feel bad if you don't feel anything - another time I had one I had no movements - the baby was sleeping. the dr woke him up by shaking a can of pennies on my belly to be sure....
