My kitty eats just dry. It's supposedly good for their teeth.

You do need to make sure that they get enough water; the wet food is a good source of water for them.

Re: Can you feed your cat just dry food??

It all depends on the cat. Ours eat's both. DH's old cat used to eat more wet than dry. The dry made her throw up...

I used to think that they needed both but then I was told that they don't. Like someone said, the dry food is better for their teeth and sometimes the wet food upsets their stomachs, depending on the cat.

My vet says to feed Wet only because dry food is carbs. And Cats in the wild don't eat pasta.

BTW, that was why I switched to the Fancy Feast, it was MUCH lower in carbs than other dry foods.
And my vet recommends dry cuz it's better for their teeth...go figure!

My cat only eats dry. He is prone to UTI's so he gets them if he eats anything but this prescribed food that we have to get from our vet. Poor guy.....however we do occassionally give him treats and some turkey. Everything in small quantities, otherwise he is in a lot of pain.

Re: Can you feed your cat just dry food??

Male cats are prone to UTI's if they ONLY eat dry food, like a poster said before cats in the wild eat meat- moist food- so giving them both is the smart way to go. Our cats for the most eat indoor formula dry and I give them wet 1 a week and they have 3 bowls filled with water all day long- I keep it fresh too, they are all males ( 5) and so far no UTI's!!!

Well we tried numerous times with out cat to give him wet food and within 2 days he would get UTI's. Then the vet said to try Iams which we did and he got another one so they had to put him on prescribed dry food only and for two years no UTI.

I have never heard that only dry food thing you stated above. My vet seemed to know right away that the issue might be wet food. Kind of boring diet my cat has, but as long as he is healthy.

Re: Can you feed your cat just dry food??

Our act only gets dry. We got here from a friend who had to get rid of her, and that was all she had gottn before so we didn't want to change it on her.

I had thought that just dry food wouldn't be ok for a cat, but when we had our last cat, we had asked that vet about feeding (we weren't sure we were giving her enough or maybe too much) and he told us he just left a bowl filled with dry food all the time for his cats and they were fine.

Nooooo! Just dry food will result in crystals in their urine. And, especially cheap dry food.

I don't think this is a proven fact for all cats...maybe some. My cat only eats dry food and has never had this.

Re: Can you feed your cat just dry food??

Our cats eat only dry food. The problem with most dry foods is that they tend to be high in carbs and sugers which causes diabetes in the cats as they age. My vet says to feed them only Science diet, Iams or Nature's Choice. I think every vet has their own opinion.
