Ugh...it begins... BDTD Moms - advice?
So I'm sitting here still shaking because I just found Jake with a penny in his mouth. I caught him just as he had put it in. I didn't know what it was at first - just that I saw him put something in there and then he was chewing and making funny faces.
I couldn't coax him to open his mouth so I did the only thing that I knew would make him cry on the spot - bring him to his crib to make him think I was putting him down for a nap (he just got up from one). I was so freaked I would make him swallow it so I carried him face down the whole time. I got it out and everything is okay.
Anyway my question is - there's got to be a better way to get them to open their mouths when they do something like this (as I'm sure this won't be the last time something like this happens). I was even considering pinching him or something at one point to make him cry... So BDTD moms - what do you do to get to open their mouths?

I have no advice... but I cant imagine how freaked you were...
This is one of my biggest fears... ESP- since my DH never emptys his pockets, and they often are left lose in the hamper- on somewhere on the floor....

If you pinch his nose he will open his mouth. The best thing to do is a finger sweep of the mouth to clear any foreign object. I'm glad you got it out and he didn't swallow it.

I was going to say the same thing.

Oooh man. I'm so sorry you had a this scare. I'm not a BDTD mom, nor sure what is the "proper" thing to do, but knowing me, I probably would have just forced my fingers in his mouth to fish the object out.
ETA: I hope you're feeling better.

No ideas here but the nose pinching sounds like a good idea.
I am so glad Jake didn't swallow it. I can't imagine how freaked out you must be.

with my little cousins we would grab their faces in between our thumb and pointer finger and squeeze their lower cheek. It hurts so they have to open up.
