Exercise during the first tri?
I used to be in great shape, however the last year I've let myself go!!! I'd love to start walking again and maybe doing a little toning of the arms. Can I do this while pregnant? If so at what point?
Everyone keeps telling me to take it easy and not do anything, just rest and stay off my feet. I have a wedding in May and would really like to fit in the bridesmaid gown I was ordered 6 months ago!!!
Thanks!!!

Re: Exercise during the first tri?
I was told that if you did not have a regular workout routine prior to becoming pg that they do not recommend that you begin one now.... walking is always ok, but wait until the 2nd trimester before doing anything more difficult...and never to let your heart rate go over 140 bpm.

Re: Exercise during the first tri?
My doctor says that moderate exercise is great. I've been working out three times a week and I feel better about myself after I work out. I'm still gaining weight, but I feel like it gives me a sense of control. If you feel good, go for it.

Re: Exercise during the first tri?
Prior to pregnancy I was doing yoga daily and walking a few times per week. I stopped the yoga because I didn't want to risk anything but kept up with walking till about month 5 - 6 then I got too out of breath. I cannot wait to start working out again!

Re: Exercise during the first tri?
You shouldn't start a workout plan now that includes anything more than walking.

Re: Exercise during the first tri?
I knew I wanted to get in shape before I got pregnant, so I did a bootcamp and started running. When I got pregnant my doctor told me I could keep working out, but not run. Until I broke my hand in January, I was working out regularly. Now its more sporadic- but I think that is more due to laziness because of the weather.

Re: Exercise during the first tri?
Thanks ladies!!!
I only want to walk and maybe do some 5lbs dumbbells (while comfortably sitting on the couch watching TV of course). Should I wait until I'm alittle further along? I'm only 4 weeks and 3 days.

Re: Exercise during the first tri?
Everyone gave great advice. Also, no lying on your back during the first trimester (crunches, etc).

Re: Exercise during the first tri?
Even though the dumbells should be fine, I personally wouldnt take the risk. Its only 8 more weeks until its safer, might as well wait.

Actually that isn't true. I took a prenatal pilates class where I was on my back- you just have to switch your position every 5-10 minutes or so.
