Teachers who have jobs on LI....
How were you able to land your job? I feel like this is never going to happen for me. Any advice?

Re: Teachers who have jobs on LI....
what are you certified in?
I registered on teachli.org for suffolk jobs and went district by district looking to see who had what open. it takes a LOT of time, and those on-line applications are a killer! easily 2+ hours the first time you do one. after that, they get easier.
the nytimes was my other savior. i would run out every sunday (in my pj's) to the deli across the street and just go ad by ad.
it is very time-consuming!! but it does pay off. I graduated in May with my Masters and had a job by 4th of July weekend. I am in math, so the market is a tad better for me - but it was still a ton of work to find a job.
ETA: I just saw on the other thread you are elementary. I am going to be totally honest here, and say that an elementary cert by itself is tough to get a job with unless you already have your foot in the door somewhere (perm sub, per diem sub). You need something else to seperate yourself from the other thousands of applicants. Maybe a spec ed or bilingual certification?? Reading certification??

Re: Teachers who have jobs on LI....
definitely register at teachli.org! I saw a few districts advertising for subs, so it would be a foot in the door. I believe they also do job fairs a few times a year.
good luck!!

Re: Teachers who have jobs on LI....
Just be patient... I'm going into my sixth year of teaching, and I still have two more years until tenure (including this upcoming year). Everyone (mostly everyone) has to "pay their dues", so just keep your chin up and stick it out. You WILL find something!

Re: Teachers who have jobs on LI....
it's so hard. so many people get jobs because they know people.
i just lucked out. i started by permanent subbing and wound up in a leave. that led to bigger and better things.

Re: Teachers who have jobs on LI....
It's very hard. I did my student teaching, and when I finished a teacher was leaving so I hopped into her position. However, my subject area is pretty high in demand so that opened up my job possibilities. Good luck to all!

Me too, though I did have to teach a leave replacement my first year. My second year, however, I had 3 job offers! But my cert is in demand!

Re: Teachers who have jobs on LI....
It was NOT easy! I was a perm sub in LI for 1 year, TA in another LI school the next year, and then taught 5th grade for 2 years in Queens. All that time I was applying to LI schools and going on interviews and NOTHING. Needless to say, it was really depressing.
After my 2 years in Queens, I finally got an offer from a GREAT district in LI - except it was as a "long term sub" (same pay and benefits as a reg teacher) but I went for it (I was miserable in Queens). As it turns out, I got my own class for the whole year and was finally offered a tenure track position for this year. As you can see, it was NOT easy for me. But in the end, my perseverance paid off, and now I am SO happy where I am. Now just 2 more years till tenure.
Good luck. It can and WILL happen!

Re: Teachers who have jobs on LI....
Well, I teach in an independent school with no desire to ever branch out to the public school system, so I went on www.nysais.org and got the addresses of all the private schools oin LI and in the city and sent my resume to them and told them to keep my resume on file, should they ever have an opening. Four years later, I still get calls. I got a ton that summer before school started and I was able to pick the school I wanted to work at. But that was four years ago, so I'm sure things have changed a bit.

Re: Teachers who have jobs on LI....
I was so lucky! I didn't go to college for teaching...but worked at a preschool as a teacher during my summers. I graduated college and realized I wanted to teach elementary school...so I started a masters at dowling, took a full course load to qualify to student teach, took the last and atsw tests...and interviewed while student teaching. Got hired for a first grade position on my last day of student teaching. Did it all in 10 months....literally zero to teacher!
VERY FORTUATE! I know how lucky I am. I had teachers go to bat for me where I was student teaching, and they granted me that first interview. I then made it all the way through the process. Got my license to teach the first week that I started!
