How to train Molly to go outside??!!!

Please help - I am so sick of the wee wee pads. I don't know how to get her to go outside. When we are out there she will go. But when I bring her to go out - she won't.

What am I doing wrong? What can I do? I am having my carpets cleaned next week and I am hoping that will erase whatever scent she has left there.

Any advice?! Chat Icon

She is 9 months. When we got her it was December and she was only 1 lb. We were making some progress with her about 2 months ago - and then she had to have surgery again so it basically went out the window.

Re: How to train Molly to go outside??!!!

I wee wee pad trained Rocky in the beginning...THen one morning I brought him outside as soon as he woke up instead bc i was getting ready to go jogging...And he did his business...
And he just stopped using the weeweepad...It was sooooo weird...

So i suggest taking her to the backyard and on the same spot in the morning and after every meal, and in the evening....And use the same phrase each time. Molly"wanna do peepee and poopoos outside"??? as you're taking her out...

Rocky now goes the sliding doors and scratches it when e wants to go out and scratches to get back in. We didnt teach him that it just happenedChat Icon

Re: How to train Molly to go outside??!!!

See - that's the thing. We can get her first thing in the morning - it's throughout the rest of the day that it doesn't work. I brought her wee wee pad out the other day and she went on there. I think I am going to really just have to be on top of her the next couple of days - and give her lots of treats when she goes.

I am hating wee wee pads now.

Re: How to train Molly to go outside??!!!

this is why i hate training on wee wee pads...

IMO it is much harder to stop that and train outside once they get used to doing it on them

what i would do:

Morning..
~wake up and bring Molly immediately outside...walk her around. She should go since she was sleeping the night. TRY not to let her in until she does

If you are not home during day hours...TAKE AWAY THE FOOD...

when you get home...IMMEDIATELY take Molly again outside. Walk her around for at least 10 mins.

If she pees or poops...always give high praise...walk her over to the poop area...smile and say good girl..

IMO if this is a backyard..think about keeping the poop there...do not pick up. When dogs go outside they have a tendency to poop in the same areas so if she smells poop outside she very well might make the association..

Give Molly food when you come in..

when she is done..play with her a LOT..

if you see signs of her wanting to go to the wee wee pad...bring her outside..

if not..Play with her with FULL exercise for about 10 mins...

then bring her outside and near the area that has poop...or until she poops

DOgs are more likely to poop after eating and/or playing .

Should Molly poop on the wee wee pad..
yes gross, i have said it before, but take the poop outside..
put in on the grass
bring Molly to the poop and say..."poopie outside"
repeat saying that..

Night Time..
say around 7ish..
let her eat the remainder of the food and water..

then TAKE IT AWAY..
PLAY with her for about 10 mins
take her outside and repeat saying poopie and pee pee molly..

go poopie

after repeating the above she will slowly get the hang of it..

and as she does you are going to have to slowly take away her access to the wee wee pads..

it sucks and if i were you i would hold off on cleaning the carpets because poor Molly will make boo boos

good luck

She was very thorough....
I completely agree with leaving the poop outside for a day or 2 each time and if she goes inside, bring it out.

Re: How to train Molly to go outside??!!!

Thank you so much!!!

I think the problem with us is consistency honestly. Sometimes I am lazy and don't mind if she goes on the wee wee pads - and other times I just sit out there with her telling her to go. I have the next couple of days here with her so I'm going to really watch what she does closely - and I will take her out alot more.

She goes in the backyard and has two spots where she goes. I just find that when I want her to go - she doesn't.

Thanks guys! I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow.

if she has a regular time that she goes outside

maybe spend extra time (say 20 mins after a meal and exercise) outside and lay the wee wee pad outside?

have her getting used to going outside to start...

Re: How to train Molly to go outside??!!!

we tried. She eats the wee wee pad and gets all berserk if we bring it outside. She thinks its to play with..We tried about 8-1o times on that one.

Tried taking her outside RIGHT after eating....right in the am, right at night before bed....nothing.

last weekend took her to the beach , she drank a lot of water while she was walking around there, we were gone for hours and she held it in the entire time.

Re: How to train Molly to go outside??!!!

We have four - but it feels like 100.

Two on the main level. One is in the living room and the second is in a side room that basically has no purpose. It used to be Molly's room before she took over my whole house. Chat Icon

Then we have two upstairs. One in the bedroom and one in the computer room. I can try to eliminate one off each floor right now I guess.

Re: How to train Molly to go outside??!!!

I used to have 2 wee wee pads down in my apt one by the front door and one by the back....now in the house we have one in case we can't take him out.

To teach him to go outside I woke up super early before work and took Tyson out for a walk...he always goes 1st thing in the morning so eventually he went outside...and now will always go outside if no wee wee pad is down. Rob takes him when he gets home from work and then one of us takes him at night. Whenever he goes outside we praise him A LOT! lol

We keep one pad down just in case though in one room to avoid accidents, which haven't happened in some time.

Re: How to train Molly to go outside??!!!

Hi, I have a pit mix Maggie and I had a hard time going from the wee wee pads to the back yard I had to crate train her to get her to make the transition.

Some one suggested bring the weee pad out side . It didn't work with Maggie because the second the pad was outside it became a play thing to her and she would rip it apart.

But it might work for Molly.

My friends have a jack russell and it took a good 9 to ten months to stop having accidents. I think it just takes longer with the smaller breeds.
