Making Baby Food

I want to start doing this because we get organic fruit and veggie delivery and its often more fruit than we can eat.

I have pears right now.
Do I peel them and puree them? Do I cook them? I couldn't find the answers in Super Baby Food.

Anyone make mangoes? I have one of those too.

No expert here but I would peel them, puree and mix with small amounts of water until you get the right consistency.

But I have a question: My friend makes her daughters food and then freezes it in ice trays. I've been considering it and probably will make something for him at some point but...

My question is, then doesn't your baby end up eating the same thing everyday for awhile because you can get alot of food out of just a couple of veggies?

She bought a whole bag of organic carrots and sweet potatoes and made alot of food. I can only imagine that her daughter must've turned orange from eating carrots and sweet potatoes everyday for so long! Chat Icon

you need to steam them (and apples, etc) to soften them up before you can puree them.

you can make a whole bunch of different foods and freeze them in ice trays, and then put them in freezer ziplock bags. generally speaking, 1 cube is about 1 oz.

i wasn't crazy about the recipies in super baby food, i really liked the book Mommy Made and Daddy too but super baby food was good at helping me learn to pick ripe fruits and veggies I'd never eaten myself, like butternut squash.

Well I figure if I freeze it and make a variety it will be no different than having a bunch of different jars.
We get different stuff delivered each week so I figured I'll do pears, apples, sweet potatoes, avocados, etc.

Oh, and tupperware makes these nice ice trays with covers. I found them a little cheaper on ebay.

I would cook it first. Did you look in the back of the Super Baby Foods Book, I thought I saw it had Pears listed and what to do. I am only on the veggies and have only made peas and sweet potatoe so far.

How do you get all the lumps out though, my blender seemed to **** at this?

Thanks for the tips Cathy, I am going to look for that book.

I did look in the back and it didn't have much info on what to do with the pears. I am one of these people who needs step by step. Peel, steam, puree, etc.

I'm totally the same way.

Here's what Mommy made says:

Pear Puree
4 med. size Barlett, Anjou or Bosc pears, washed, peeled, quartered & cored just before cooking

Place pear quarters in a steamer basket set in a pot filled with a small amount of lightly boiling water. Cover tightly (for better nutrient retention) and cook for 8-12 mins or until pears are tender, replenishing water during steaming if necessary. Test for doneness with a toothpick or fork; pears should pierece easily. Set pears aside to cool. Strain pears in a food mill or puree in a food processor fitted with a steel blade. Discard the cooking liquid or save for another use. No additional liquid is needed. Makes 12-14 1 oz or heaped tablespoon servings.

Micro directions: Place prepared pear quarters in a micro-safe dish. Add 1/4 cup water and cover tightly with plastic wrap, pulling back 1 corner to vent. Micro on high for 3 mins, stir thoroughly, re-cover and cook for 3 to 6 mins or until tender. Check for doneness, cool & proceed with above recipe.

Peas were tough, but with sweet potatos I would add a little water to help make it a little smoother.

It seemed like the stuff was too thick and nothing was even touching the blades. How much water do you add?

Super Baby Food book is a great resource. I made all of Molly's food for the first year,except for applesauce. I purchased the Motts organic no-sugar added.

I cut them up into little chunks before throwing them in the blender.

A food mill is like an old fashioned food processor where you crank the handle yourself. I just used the blender.

I make up mango and papaya all the time....no need to cook, just remove the skin and seeds, and put in the machine to chop it up...freeze using the food cube method...I think both are discussed in the super baby foods book as well...
