Those with small breed dogs....House breaking ?

Did you train yours to go pee outside or inside on wee wee pads or both?

I would like to try both. Since shes home for a stretch alone during the day, But the book I got said that could be confusing?

Anyone taught theirs to do both, go outside and WHERE to go when inside if needed?

TIA!

Re: Those with small breed dogs....House breaking ?

I have a small dog and I have to say housetraining takes a lot of consistency and patience. At first I Started only on the wee wee pads until she had that down pat, then I started to move the wee wee pad closer to the door and eventually started to go just outside. When I transitioned going outside I did it on the weekend and stayed home the whole weekend and took her out every 15 min. and everytime she went I would reward her with a treat, and after one weekend she was doing pretty well but it took a good amount of time before their was not accidents at all. I would also crate her during the day while we were at work, I know that helped a lot in the potty training area.

I know it is frustrating but she will finally get the hang of it.

Our little one is trained to only go outside. He was basically trained before we got him but in the begining he had to get used to us. He made a few messes inside. I don't like the wee-wee pad idea.

When I first got Emmy, I put the wee wee pads down and I would take her out at 6:30 am, 8:00am, 5:00 pm, 7:00pm, 9:00 and 10:00. I know it seems like a lot, but she was only 1 lb when I got her and she peed and pooped a LOT. While I was at work, she would go on the pads (or try to and somehow always *just* miss it, LOL). Then, as she got older, she stopped using the pads. So, I stopped putting them down. After a while she also stopped going for so many walks. We would go to take her, and she would hide. So now she only goes when she asks us. Usually 8:00am, 5 or 6 pm, 8:30 pm and 11 pm.

We crate trained her and only went outside for potty. Then since she doesn't bark a lot we hung a bell next to the back door for her to ring to go outside. It works really well. It took a few months-I'd say 3 (so she was 5 mos old)-for her to stop having any accidents. It only took 2 days to teach her the bell. We did that toward the end and it really helped.

We got Molly in the dead of winter and she was only 1.5lbs so we put her on wee wee pads. Now that the weather is nice out we bring her outside....I didn't realize how much I would like it. I am so sick of wee wee pads and can't wait for her to go out all the time.

Mine both go in a litter box that stays in the spare room. It never stinks, we can leave the house for as long as we want, and we also trained them to go outside.

Re: Those with small breed dogs....House breaking ?

I never taught my dog but he does do both. When we got him we lived in a co-op so I pad trained him. About six months later we moved to our house and he started going in our fenced in yard. Now he even "goes" when we go for a walk. I never taught him any of this I guess he just figured it out on his own!Chat Icon
