Question on wainscotting & chair rails

Does anyone know if wainscotting or chair rails make a room look smaller? I was thinking of doing one or the other in my daughters room when we redo it but her room is small to begin with and dont want to make it appear tinier.

We're putting white wainscotting in our new bathroom. I don't think it will close the room in because of the color.

We have a small first floor bath and I don't think it closed it in at all. I guess it depends the color you paint it too...

I dont think it will have that effect. In fact, if you did a white wainscotting and a light color wall it may brighten up the room and make it look bigger. I feel like the only thing that will make a room look smaller is painting it all a dark color....

WE made our old office into Andrew's big boy bedroom, and its the smallest room in the house, but I don't think its any smaller because of the wainscotting. I actually like it... we have our dining room with wainscotting too, but in white wiht a red top.

Here's Andrew's room:

Ooooh...I like the border on top of it Trish. So cute! I would do white for her room. Good to know that it doesnt make it look smaller b/c her room is super tiny but she's out on the big room since the lil sib ended up being another boy.
