Blue Cheese & Mozzerella

I am 23 wks and have eaten Blue Cheese, a small amount with buffallo wings and fresh mozzerella. I thought it was just feta and brie...I am so scared now...what does it do to the baby.

i don't think you really have to worry about blue cheese dressing- it is the real stuff- and the fresh mozz is something you're supposed to stay away from- but i had 2 pieces- i'm sure you'll be fine.

Re: Blue Cheese & Mozzerella

You are advised not to eat certain cheeses (brie, camembert, feta, blue cheese, and mexican-style soft cheeses) during PG because of possible bacterial infection from listeria bacteria. However, just because you eat the cheese doesn't mean that you will get the infection. You should be OK (I don't know how likely the infection is), but it's best not to eat them.

I ate fresh mozzarella and tomatoes at a wedding before I knew I was pregnant. I dont think anything happened. What can happen anyway?

Re: Blue Cheese & Mozzerella

It is just the fresh stuff you have to worry about - not dressing for your salads. And as long as you didn't have a whole think of FRESH mozz cheese you will be fine. I think you should just watch were you get it from, make sure it is from a restaurant that you would serve it fresh - like an Italian restaurant, would have it fresh and not have it in the restaurant for a long time. For instance, I would be weary getting it from a deli.

Re: Blue Cheese & Mozzerella

It's UNPASTEURIZED cheeses that are unsafe..... Pasteurized cheeses are heated to kill bacteria and unpasteurized cheeses are not, so by eating those types of cheeses you risk getting Salmonella, E-Coli, etc. Most cheeses even Brie that you buy in a grocery store are pasteurized...you just have to check the label... I've eaten brie and blue cheese, but they were pasteurized... it's not that the cheese is directly going to affect the baby it's that you take a chance of getting Salmonella or E-Coli or something.

Don't stress about it. As long as you are not eating pounds of the stuff.

My Dr. told me you can do more damage to the baby by stressing over the little things, then eating something on the "forbidden list" once in awhile.

i would not worry at all. Nothing will happen. Anything in small doses will not hurt. Just like kids - all preganancies are different. Don't read so much...you will drive yourself crazy. Worrying and anxiety are worse than anything that you can eat. You should look up anxiety and pregancy - that's way more serious. Calm down. Anxious pregancies are no good.

That's what my doc told me as well. He told me to stop reading and listening to people - that stressing out was equally as unhealthy. Easier said than done of course - I'd be lying if I said that I haven't stressed out yet. I also drank diet sodas, ate several hot dogs, and I'm sure had other things I didn't realize were bad for me on other occassions. As long as it's in small amounts, don't worry.
