Re: My DH just received this email from a coworker and I do NOT think it's appropriate

Wow! Way to lay on the guilt! I have to say we have the same thing in my office, and 2 co-workers who live at home for free with their parents said they couldn't afford to chip in. I really resented that since I have so many more monetary responsibilities, but it's not like you and your DH have no responsibilities...I'd say ignore her, but I honestly give anything they ask me to in the office since I don't sh!t talked about me. That's completely rude and inappropriate. If your DH doens't want to contribute or feels he can't, it's really none of her business and she can take her sob story elsewhere. There's no requirement that says anyone HAS to do these things. It sounds like she does this on her owna nd doesn't ask people how expensive a gift they want to buy or how much they can contribute. She doesn't own the office. I'd be ****** off !

ooh...yeah very improper remarks put into that e-mail. I don't know Chat Icon Like she's trying to make him feel guilty? Oh well, we all do what we can and if he can't give money all the time then it's fine. I wouldn't sweat it....Chat Icon

That is a lousy email to send to him. Can she make him feel any more guiltyChat Icon
I too would ignore and give what he can.
Im confused, they want to chip in for a housewarming gift??
Let him give his own, why does everything have to be a group present.

That is none of hers or anyones business what he does with his money. He can go out on a shopping spree right now if he wants and he does not have to contribute one dime for any coworker. I would ignore it but keep it - that woman has a lot of nerve writing something like that!

Wow! What nerve!

We used to collect for a Christmas gift for our companies owner. He asked us to stop because he didn't feel it was appropriate.

Totally inappropriate!
I bet your DH isnt the only one at the company who feels this way. Mabey he can find out and if thats the case he can organize the Xmas gift - and not spend so much $.

This woman has balls - if its the thought that counts and not the $ then why s she spending so much.

As a single parent she shouls put that money towards her kids not kissing a$$ at work.

That's outrageous! At my office they pass around an envelope so you can donate whatever you want depending on your relationship with the person.

we just get flyers in our mailboxes that they are collecting $$ for so in so for a shower or our boss for an Xmas gift, and if you want to give$$ give it to_______.
That is the most appropriate way of doing it.

The email wouldn't bother me, I would just be like ..... Chat Icon

BUT I think its completely inappropriate to collect from employees for owners of any company, exceptions would be for *maybe* a donation to a charity if a family member passed, or something as meaningful.

The companys anniversary? House warming for a 2 million dollar home? Gimme a break... tell her you need to "warm" your own home this winter and I'm sure they will have no problem doing so. Honestly, what do you get for someone in that position? A gift cert to Bed Bath & Beyond? I think not, its pointless..... Chat Icon

That was my reaction exactly. You are not supposed to give your boss gifts- its the other way around. Anyway- that was a $hitty e-mail she sent. Your DH shouldn't feel obligated to give a certain amount, or at all. I like the way they do it in Donna's office- just pass an envelope around and everyone puts in what they feel is appropriate.

ETA: I think there is something wrong with this boss if they keep accepting these kinds of gifts. The boss should tell them to stop givign him gifts.

thats nuts...no one should expect someone else to contribute to a gift every other month for the bosses. If we had that kind of $$ we would be the boss.

I'd be so offended by that!! Does everyone contribute the same amount of $$??

And just because another family is putting in, doesn't mean they can afford it...how does she know if the money they are putting in is grocery money or a bill payment and they just feel guilty NOT putting the $$ in????

UGH....

A: you could put in whatever you could afford

B:get your own gifts

Ugh. I can't believe how thick that woman laid it on. She's probably paniced that she'll be stuck for his portion and when more people find out he didn't contribute next time other people won't too.

I worked for one company where we all had to contribute to the president's holiday and birthday gifts and the amount was based on your level. So analysts were expected to give $25, managers were expected to give $50, directors $100, and so on. And we weren't getting paid very much, so it was a decent portion of your weekly check.

That was totally uncalled for of that women and inappropriate. Noone asked her about her personal, financial situation so don't see why she should compare the two situations - i would confront her and make that clear to her that every situation is different and her email was uncalled for.
