Before painting your new house...question

We are a few weeks away from being 1st time home owners. I don't have living room furniture yet (for that matter, any furniture). I am afraid to pick colors to paint being that I don't know what colors my furniture will be. Did anyone paint (besides white) without knowing what furniture will be in there?

Any advice on this whole proces would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

Re: Before painting your new house...question

This is a good point...I guess I will have to wait to paint until we choose furniture for certain rooms. Rooms that I have stuff for, I will paint ahead of time.

Re: Before painting your new house...question

our whole house is painted a very light neutral color...we just recently purchased some furniture and just the other day we painted the formal dining room, the color will compliment the new furniture nicely.
I would wait till you bought your furniture so you at least can pick colors that will compliment it.

Or you can catalog shop & get an idea of what you like. If you thin you'll end up with neutral furniture, you can paint the walls whatever color you want.

DH insisted on painting before we bought furniture and picked actual colors, not neutrals. It made the task of shopping for furniture much for difficult, JMO.

You're safe if you go w/ neutral paints and then order furniture. Otherwise I can see it being difficult to pick out furniture and worry about it matching your paint choices.

We ordered our furniture first and now we're trying to narrow down our paint colors. Im happy we did it this way though.

We painted our house without knowing what a lot of the furniture would be. We decided to just pick a color and then match furniture to it later. Many places have custom upholstery so I didnt find it difficult to match to our color scheme at all. You just need to have a general idea of how you want your house to flow if that makes any sense.

Thanks for all your input. It is so stressful. I feel like, I want a color but am afraid. What if...I find furniture and then don't like the color. I guess I will stay around tan or something. I just don't want my whole house to be white forever and I feel like it is now or forever down the road. Thanks.

Re: Before painting your new house...question

I went basic as well. I chose very strong neutral, earthy colors. Mostly in the brown/taupe/beige family.

Benjamin Moore has some fabulous choices.

Re: Before painting your new house...question

The only rooms we've painted thus far is the bathroom & our bedroom. I have patches of paint in the LR in different spots trying to decide what I want AND I already have furniture. In my mind, it's better to live in a space before painting...but that's what works for me - not everyone else.

I started out wanting blues in the LR and now I'm on golds. I think things change once you've started living in a space...

We gave enverything a fresh coat of some neutral color when we moved in. Over the past couple of years we repainted all the rooms to colors we like better.
