So I just had to tell my boss... (long)
Over the summer I decided to look for a new job closer to home. I commuted into NYC for 5 years and was pretty tired of it. So I found a decent job on LI only 10 min. from home.
Well my boss works in NYC for half the week and here in the Garden City office the other half. I just found out that he got a new boss today and she is based in the NYC office. She is a serious micro manager (boss and I are scared by this!) and she now wants him and I to report to the city 3 days a week!
I felt terrible telling my boss this way, but I'm just starting my 2nd trimester and this is going to get hard for me. Commuing while preggo is so hard and I feel for every woman who has to do it. Though I won't mind going in occasionally to the city. I don't want to do 3 days a week!!
I think I'm going to have to start to look for a new job
I'm going to find out more on Monday. But please say a prayer that this will work out for me. How the heck do I look for a new job at 3 months pregnant??

I'm sorry you have to go through this.
You should be aware that if you switch jobs now, you will most likely not have any maternity benefits beyond short term disability from the state. I was with my company for 11 months when I delivered and I only got state disability ($170 per week PRETAX) for 6 weeks and my employment was terminated as were my health benefits as soon as my sick & vacation days were used up.
I don't mean to add any more stress to you, just wanted you to be aware.

Sorry you are going through this. Maybe you can ask your boss to let you only come to the city once a week. I am in my 2nd trimester and commuting and its not so bad. It will all work out.

Re: So I just had to tell my boss... (long)
are you planning to go back to work after you have the baby? i thought you were going to be a SAHM. If you're not going back, I wouldn't even think about looking for another job. Also, I'm not sure about this and it might not even be a factor for you, but I think you have to be at your job for at least a year in order to be able to take time off through FMLA. I hope everything works out for you. Maybe they will agree to let you go in to the city less often considering your situation.

Oh no....I know how much it meant to you to work closer to home I cannot believe they want you to do that. Well, you said after the baby comes you are going to be a SAHM right? So if you have to resign, maybe you can temp for a while or do something from home?

Sending you hugs and prayers that everything will work out for the best
Just wanted to let you know that I've been commuting from Whitestone to Times Square every day and it hasn't been that bad at all. It sometimes takes me over an hour too.
Im due in February - and although Im anticipating it will get harder as I get bigger, I am still going to continue this routine. I plan to take disabiltity in January - so i have to fight it through another couple months. But people have been offering me seats on the train and bus and I sit down all day at work - so its been going great so far.
I think it may be hard looking for a job while pregnant and because you won't have seniority there for awhile - you won't be eligible for 100% maternity leave/disability if you were to leave your current job, just something to keep in mind.

i would not look for a new job as absent some personal connection, the odds are so against you being pregnant. i would try to work something out with your current boss and worst case scenario start implying "pregnancy discrimination" as needed.
i hope everything works out for you!

Re: So I just had to tell my boss... (long)
Thanks everyone!
I'm going to find out more about this today. Yes, I will be a SAHM after... but we need to save money until then! So of course I need a job until at least May. I'm going to sit down with my boss later and we're going to have to figure something out. I think I'm going to tell him I want 1 day in the city and that's it.
