Curley's bark saves girl with asthma
BY JULIA NEYMAN
Newsday Staff Writer

July 13, 2006

When Jean Stout came home from school, Curley was there to greet her. When she slept, he snuggled next to her. He even put up with the 10-year-old when she played "blanket monster," a game in which she tried to hold a blanket over his head.

So when Jean woke up in the middle of the night, staggered into the bathroom wheezing and choking and passed out in the bathtub early Monday, the Irish terrier did what any faithful dog would do: He barked like there was no tomorrow.

Curley's barking alerted Jean's parents and saved her life.

"I knew in my heart it wasn't her time," said Jean's mother, Ellen, at the family's home in East Northport yesterday. "We knew she had help from angels and she would be OK."

The family was visiting Jean's grandfather Jim Stout Sr. in upstate Stony Creek when Jean suffered a severe asthma attack.

Though Jean's memory of the night is hazy, her parents said she awoke at around 2 a.m. Monday and found she couldn't breathe. Jean has suffered from asthma since she was 18 months old, her mother said, but had never had an episode this bad.

Jean told her parents that she tried tucking her knees to her chest to jump-start her breathing but quickly fell unconscious. It was then that Curley, normally a quiet and sedate dog, began to bark, Jean's parents said.

"I noticed he was barking at the bathroom door," said Jean's father, Jim Stout Jr., 45. "I opened the bathroom door and I heard a very faint, very small noise."

Her dad said he found Jean "laying there in the tub, completely blue-gray and unconscious." Jim Sr. gave her CPR. Paramedics rushed her to Glens Falls Community Hospital.

"I remember lying on the floor in the house, and my mom saying, 'Wake up, wake up,'" Jean said. "I remember saying, 'Hi, Dad.'"

Ellen said Curley has always been smart and attentive toward Jean and her brother, James, 5. "He knows when they should be home, and what they should be doing," she said.

Doctors said Jean had probably suffered from a mucus plug, and fitted her with a heart monitor. Jean's parents are sleeping with her at night so that they can monitor her breathing.

But Jean said she isn't scared. She just feels a little "weird" about it. "Don't cry again, Mom," she said as her mother began to tell the story. "I'll be going to grandpa's if you start."

That's amazing!
That happened with my uncle's german shepherd Ringo. There was carbon monoxide leaking into their home from the fireplace and he was barking and barking and barking and going NUTS! He was grabbing my uncle's hands in his mouth. When my uncle woke up, he instantly knew something was wrong and checked the children who were already passed out! The dog saved the entire family!
