Re: breast pump question
I have a Medela Symphony rented from a service, but I have a Medela Single Electric Hand pump and I thought it was okay, but not for the volume that I was pumping.

Re: breast pump question
The only pump I would recommend is the Medela PIS! It was seriously WAY better then even the one they let me use in the hospital!

Re: breast pump question
The Medela PIS seemed so expensive. If I am planning on nursing (due in Aug), should I purchase one? Or rent? I don't really know much about breastfeeding yet.

Re: breast pump question
I first used the First Years electric pump-$40 at BRU and it was awesome. But after about 4 months I felt like the engine was going on it so I bought the Medela. To me it was a total waste of money. I did not have any better results from it then I did the $40 pump. It was a little faster, but not much faster. And I did not get more out of it at all.
And a tip in general, I would not buy a pump, especially one as expensive as the Medela, until after you give birth. See how you do with BF first. Make sure you want to continue and then buy one. My best friend bought a pump and then after a couple of weeks she was having a really difficult time with nursing and pumping so she stopped all together. She only used the pump like 10 times.

Re: breast pump question
I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Medela PIS... at this point, I can get about 15 ounces per pump so I only have to pump 2 or 3 times a day... SO nice! I didn't know if BFing was going to work out so I didn't buy mine until about 2 weeks after I came home from the hospital, and I bought it online for $175... it was the best purchase I made

I don't really know much about breastfeeding yet. a lot of people have suggested that i rent before i buy. i will try to breastfeed, but one never knows how it's going to turn out, so as of now i plan to rent. but like you, i don't really know much about breastfeeding yet .
me either or if it will even work for me and the baby.. so I too do not really want to buy one but need to have something..

Re: breast pump question
It all depends on your needs. If you are going to use a pump in the first few weeks then a hospital grade pump is what is really needed to help establish a supply. If you are going to nurse and be a full-time working mom then you need a very high quality pump such as a Medela Pump in Style. If you are going to be a SAHM and just want to pump for occassional feedings the lower end Medela would work fine.
I spent $1000 between the Lacation Consultants, rental pump, PIS (advance). and it was worth every last penny.
You can purchase the PIS from Leche Connection on eBay for much cheaper than BBB, BRU. I think I saved nearly $80-$100 on my pump.
I purchased my PIS (Advanced) prior to Molly's being born. I was very committed to bfing and by purchasing the pump it helped to give me a bit of motivation. Many bfing issues can be worked out so if you run into trouble please let us all know. There are almost always solutions.
www.kellymom.com is a GREAT site for bfing moms!

Re: breast pump question
I've used the PIS and the Lactina plus...both work great...The BEST advice I can give you...EBAY! I got mine like new off ebay and paid $50.00! It's the same as renting it IMO, just get all new tubing and containers.
