I usually get it, but i decided not to this year because of the pregnancy - even though I heard it is safe to take in the 2nd trimester...

Re: Flu Shot
I get it every year, and was having a hard time finding it before flu season. My OB recommended I definitely get it but she didn't have it yet nor did my primary Dr. I actually got it from my Mom's Dr. while I was taking her to an appointment.

Re: Flu Shot
My OB Nurse (along with every Pregnancy mag I've been reading) suggested I do so, but I almost never get the flu & I'm afraid of getting the symptoms after the shot is administered. I'll pass on the shot & take my chances.

Re: Flu Shot
Never have and probably never will. I was pregnant during flu season last year and didn't get it and I work in healthcare and I am around sick people all the time. I never get the flu, I just think I have a really good immune system.

Re: Flu Shot
i got mine two weeks ago. everything that i read says that if you get the flu during pregnancy your more likely to end up in the hospital with pnemonia or upper respitory. also passed the immunity onto the baby for the first 4 months.

I'm getting it next week. My doctor highly recommended I get it. My OB did not have it, although my Primary Care Physician did.

Re: Flu Shot
My OB recommended but I keep on debating whether or not to get it. I heard that the flu effects are worse than the actual shot. I am afraid of getting the flu because I do get it every few years or so and I have never been vaccinated before. My husband got the shot already which I was glad because he works with the public and commutes on the subway...so many yucky germs!
Now that I am pregnant and my immune system is weaker, it's a different story so I think I am going to get the shot....but waiting for my OB to get them in !

Re: Flu Shot
I got it about a week and a half ago. The OB highly recommended it.
I've gotten the shot for ten years now, since I was about 18, and have never suffered a side effect other than a sore arm!

I will probably get it when I get preggo altho I vowed to NEVER get it again. A few years ago, it freakin gave me the flu! I was horribly horribly sick for over a week, it was the worst sickness I ever experienced, next to getting pneumonia when I was in Cancun (back in college of course lol)

Re: Flu Shot
you still can get the flu if you get the flu shot there are different strains of the flu and the flu is given to eliminate the most common one and to help so that you dont get a very bad case of it.

Re: Flu Shot
The flu shot is not a live vaccine (unless you get the intranasal mist) so it can not give you the flu. The immunity usually takes at least 2 weeks to build up, so you would probably have gotten sick anyway. The flu shot also doesn't protect you from "colds". It is specific to the influenza virus, and it is formulated to give you immunity to the most common strains projected for that year. Once your immunity is built up from the shot, if you do get the flu, it is usually shorter and much milder. When pregnant, your immune system is already stressed by growing another person, so it is usually a good idea to take any steps possible to protect yourself (and the little baby), since high fevers and steps involved in treating the the flu can be dangerous to the baby. I'm glad to hear you are thinking about getting the shot when you get PG. Unless you can't already tell, I am a big advocate of the flu shot mainy because I had the flu a few years ago and I was sicker than I EVER want to be again. I take every step possible to avoid it. Also, working in healthcare, I see how sick the flu actually can make people.
