Big baby question
I'm 35 weeks and had a growth sonogram yesterday. The tech estimated my baby's weight to be 6 pounds 11oz already and I still have a month to go!! I'm totally freaked since I'm really petite and can't imagine having a big baby. The doctor wasn't concerned and said the method they use to estimate weight can be off up to a pound in either direction. I'm going back in 3 weeks for another one.
Did this happen to anyone else? If so, what was the outcome?
Thanks for any advice you can give.

Re: Big baby question
Not that I'm experienced but I;ve heard that these estimations are many times wayyyy off so don't get too concerned just yet. My friend was told her baby at 33 weeks was already nearing 8 lbs. She delivered an 8lb 10 oz baby at 40 weeks.

Re: Big baby question
At 39 weeks pregnant - the doctor estimated that my baby was 8.5 - 9 lbs or more. I ended up being 5 days late and induced and my baby was 7 lbs 6 oz. She does have long arms and legs - so i think that is what threw them off in the sonogram.

Re: Big baby question
They said Julia would weigh around 7 lbs at birth and she ended up being 8lbs 5 oz, and I had her 2 weeks early.

Re: Big baby question
I'm 5'2, and I had a 9 lb baby naturally. I can still walk.
My advice, don't even think about it. There is nothing you can do, and your body can handle much more than you realize!!!

Re: Big baby question
My daughter was 9lbs 10 oz at birth, and they estimated 10-3 a few days prior. I ended up having a c-section.
My sister did have an 8lb baby naturally just fine. I've heard of people doing even more then that with no problems.

Re: Big baby question
my sono tech told me that the baby grows an estimated 1lb. every 2 weeks. You are probably looking at an 8.5lb. baby if you go 40 weeks.. which is not too bad.. both my kids were 8 lbs
good luck

Re: Big baby question
With both my children, the growth sono estimates were pretty accurate. My first was 9 lbs 7 oz and 3 weeks early, delivered by c/s because he was breech, NOT because of his size. My second was a VBAC and she was 7 lbs. 11 oz. I wouldn't worry at all.

Re: Big baby question
Sonograms aren't always correct when they estimate size....They said Nate would be around 8.5lbs, he was 10lbs 3oz. I had a vaginal birth.

Re: Big baby question
My sonograms were actually right. I was measuring big and they didnt understand why since I am average height and weight and I didnt gain that much. They had me go for another glucose test in case the first was a false negative. I was going to a group practice but especially liked one particular doctor so in the end I was making most of my appointments with him. He kept telling me not to worry and that he has had smaller women then me deliver big babies and no problems. When I went past my due date I was really getting impatient and urged him to do something. He scheduled an induction. The induction didnt work and I had a c-section. DD was 9'10 and had a very large head. The dr. that perfomed the C told me there was no way I would have had her vaginally. Everything worked out fine but in hindsight I wish I would have gotten another opinion earlier instead of just trusting this one doctor.

Re: Big baby question
My sono was also pretty accurate. At 36 weeks DS was approx. 6lbs 3oz and he was 8lbs when he was born and I delieverd vaginaly at 39 weeks with no problems. The tech said that it can go up to 2lbs either way. They use the measurements othe thigh bone, stomach and head circumance and input those numbers into some sort of program and it comes back with a number if I had my understand correctly.

Re: Big baby question
With Caiden I was told 1 week shy of my due date he was measuring 9lb 12oz, of course give or take a lb. Well, they were really close. He ended up coming 5 days early and weighing in at 10lb 12oz. He also had a big head. So for me the sono's were pretty accurate. I also had a c-section. When he was born they said I never would of been able to deliver vaginally. His head would of got stuck. I don't know if this matters but Caiden was measuring 2 weeks bigger all along and this baby has been measuring 3 weeks bigger all along so we'll see if they're right again! I'm hoping he comes a little bit sooner this time so he's not as big as Caiden. But I do have to say that it was nice for him to be so big because when you hold him it doesn't feel like he's going to break!

Re: Big baby question
Please do not put too much faith in sonogram estimates! I am a tiny gal was told a week before I delivered that DD was going to be 8 1/2 - 9 lbs! I delivered her naturally (NO DRUGS) 10 days past estimated due date at 7 lbs even!

Re: Big baby question
My growth sono was wayyy off. At 32 weeks they estimated DD to be 5 lbs, and told me that she would be on the larger side of normal high 8's low 9 lbs. Gianna was born right on time at 7lbs 2ozs, which to me isn't the larger side of normal! I am petite 5'3'' and gave birth naturally, i expected her to be much bigger

Re: Big baby question
Mine was off in the other direction. Measure at 4.5 lbs, born 6lb 7oz 2 days later.
If you do a search back on MrsJ's posts, you can see they were completely off on hers as well. They said Katie was ginormous & she was a little peanut.

Re: Big baby question
My OB was sending me for growth sonos every week at the end of my 3rd trimester. Everyone kept telling me I was going to have this giganto baby. At 37 weeks her head was measuring 42 weeks!! Imagine me thinking about pushing THAT out! Her body was measuring at 39-40 weeks. My FIL told me better forget pampers and just get Depends since I was goign to give birth to a toddler-sized baby All along they kept saying "big baby" and told me she's be at least 10lbs if I went to term. They tried to get me to schedule a c-section since she was so big...(in the long run after 22hrs of labor I had an emergency c/s ayway)...well my baby was born 6 lbs 15 oz...they were totally wrong.
ETA: Barb, yes! - they were way off..she was a little peanut
