I've always said that the most fun you can have in NYC with a $10 bill is to get a manicure! But that won't kill too much time...and not sure your BF would be too into that
I second the park - whenever we just "went for a walk in the park" we always happened upon something interesting.
You can do the Cloisters - it's a suggested $10 donation...but you don't really have to give that much.

have you ever been to Sony Wonder? it's free, but it's suggested that you reserve a slot in advance online. it's not that big of a deal, but it has some innovative games and stuff, and it's a good way to kill an afternoon. How about playing with the toys at FAO Schwarz or Toys R US in Times Square?

Haven't been there in ages, but in college I loved to bum around the Village. Have to say though the $10 limit screams Chinatown to me

Re: fun things to do? for free?..
The metropolitan art museum is a suggested donation - but when I was in school and had to go for my studio classes our professor told us it is a suggested donation and that we should feel free to pay what we could afford. I used to work there for a summer and I know many people pay from .10 cents to only a few dollars - but many don't realize it is just a suggested amount.
You could walk around central park afterwards - or take a walk down 5th ave and window shop on the way to penn station

Where the hell is Rachel Ray when you need her...she get 3 meals and snacks all for 40 bucks a day...I am sure she can find something to do with 10!
