its not even that i mind paying for them, its that i want a different one for each contact and that gets expensive!

They definitely do! I've found that in many ringtones forums, members swap rintones, and it's free. It might be a pain, but you'd have to save them, and then send them to your cell phone (as attachement, or in a link). This is how I've downloaded all of my ringtones.
Also, there's a site (mobile17.com) that lets you make ringtone out of MP3 songs... if your phone is compatible.

I have a geocities webpage, and I just save ringtones on there, that way I could just text myself the link, and download through my phone's browser. All I pay for are the kbs used during the download... and most songs are less than 15kbs anyway, so it doesn't come up to more than .50¢ per song.
