Weaning to whole milk question
How long do you wait to increase the oz. of milk? We've been waiting 3 days, but she hasn't had any reactions, so I don't know if that's overkill. Before we started we were slightly concerned since she had a reaction - extremely bad gas - to yougrt so I've been slow to make big changes to her diet. We're up to 2 oz of milk.
I need to pick up formula so I'm trying to figure out how much I need.

Re: Weaning to whole milk question
we mixed 1/3 formula and 2/3 milk for a week, then 1/2 and 1/2 for a week and then just milk. ETA - before we did 1/3 form and 2/3 milk I just mixed a little bit of whole milk in once or twice a week to see how she did with it and when she was fine with that I started mixing every day.

Re: Weaning to whole milk question
I started 1 oz at a time and waited about 2-3 days between upping the oz. Kevin showed reaction right away. By 2 oz he was very gassy, his poop was very different and he was basically miserable all day long. I brought him to 3oz and it got worse. He was miserable - like he was colic again. I took him off and he was fine. He is lactose intolerant. I expected that since he had probalems with regular formula and was on Alimentum, my DH is lactose intolerant and we had yogurt issues too.

I'm curious - what do you feed your child if he is lactose intolerant to make sure he gets enough calcium? DH and I are toying with the idea of not giving Alex milk when the time comes, and are curious as to what other supplements there are...

Re: Weaning to whole milk question
I don't mean to jump in here, but Michael is lactose intolerant as well - he is on Lactaid, which is whole milk with the sugar lactose broken down... you can also give Soy milk, but have to make sure it has added calcium and stuff added to it (I think)... Michael also has soy yogurt - but for some reason I'm not so sure it's doing him any good... and there are TONS of other lactose free products out there! I am still new to this, so right now, that's all I can answer!
ETA - when we did start whole milk - we raised it an oz a week... by time we hit 5-6oz, we were SCREWED!

Soy milk is calcium enriched (I think many are for the most part). From reading the labels it seems to have the same as whole milk - Dh did some comparisons - honestly never did myself. As far as other products, right now it is trial and error to see which he can and can't handle. Whole milk carries higher amounts of the lactose protein than yogurt and cheeses. He doesn't seem to handle yogurt but some cheese seems ok as long as I don't go overboard. He handles eggs - just a little gassy. My dr recommended I do the trial and error thing and check out trader joes to see what lactose free products are out there. I have only been sure of this for 2 weeks so I have a lot to learn. My Dh is lactose intolerant but he just eats what he wants and deals with the consequences of his actions - he loves yogurt and eggs even though they make him sick!! We may try to go back to whole milk as he gets older but dr says since it is familial good chance he will still have issues. One dr said I should try again when he gets older and the other said why bother - so we shall see when he gets closer to 2 how we feel and how bad it really is.
