SUNY PURCHASE
Anyone here go there? Thoughts on the place? I'm currently helping my niece college shop and Purchase has a program she's interested in and she also likes that she'd be going away to school, but not very far away. But we know nothing about the area or school itself. (Other considerations are Oneonta and Albany.) Thanks.

Thanks. I went to Albany and I know Binghampton is a fantastic school, but I know nothing about Purchase so I'm looking for feedback specifically about that.

Re: SUNY PURCHASE
Purchase has excellent arts programs. If that's what she is interested in (theater, music, visual arts) it's a great place.

Actually Stony Brook is ranked higher than Albany, but Binghamton generally always comes in as #1 (random facts from someone whose family all work in the SUNY system). I didn't go to any of the SUNYs so I don't have any allegiance. But some are much better than others for certain things--Purchase is excellent for the fine arts, theatre, music. Geneseo is tied with Binghamton as the most difficult to get into (with Stony Brook as third), and has an excellent reputation as well. I've been to conferences at Purchase--it's a small, pretty campus close to the city but in a suburban area.
Here's the link to the SUNY Admissions facts.

Re: SUNY PURCHASE
I looked into purchase. it would have been my top choice had I gone to SUNY. They have good arts programs, it's in a nice area and it's not that far!

Re: SUNY PURCHASE
I knew someone who went there and really enjoyed it. Other considerations are SUNY New Paltz...I went to SUNY Cortland - about a 4.5 hour drive from Long Island.

Re: SUNY PURCHASE
I didn't got to SUNY Purchase, but I grew up in Purchase. The area is really nice so safety wouldn't be a concern. Unlike many other colleges there is really no college town and she won't be walking anywhere off campus. Purchase consists of beautiful homes, a deli, a couple of restaurants and a post office. But if you go right up the street you're in White Plains (which is where I live.) You have 2 large malls, many shopping centers, tons of bars and restaurants, supermarket, etc... I personally love where I live. White Plains has so many ammenities and we're only a half hour from NYC. One thing I will say though is off campus housing would be a lot more expensive in this area than by other SUNY schools.

Re: SUNY PURCHASE
I am also familar with the area, not the school. It is basically right in the middle of the suburbs, so she'd probably need a car, ( I don't know what the rules are for keeping a car on campus) but it a safe & pretty area.
As Nicole said, there's not so much nightlife in Purchase, but there are bars, restaurants, malls & a movie theatre in White Plains.
Its' also close to the tiny Westchester county Airport.

Re: SUNY PURCHASE
I know Purchase is big with performing arts, no?
I went to SUNY New Paltz- i had a WONDERFUL experience there- it's a huge teaching and fine art school (painting, sculpting, etc- not so much music though).
I know it has become very competitive to get in... much more now than when I went there.
I visited a lot of the different SUNYs & liked New Paltz as it was in a safe town, everything w/i walking distance, it was far enough from home, but close enough that I could go home for the weekend- it was big enough that I could "hide" but small enough so I could still "stand out"- I saw both Albany & Binghampton- but both were WAY too big and Binghampton was a little too far for me, and Stonybrook was way too close to home.

Re: SUNY PURCHASE
Thanks for the responses so far. She actually lives in Lake Ronkonkoma, so even though it's a better school academically, she doesn't want to go to Stonybrook because she wants to dorm. And she's worried that Albany is too far and too big (ditto on Binghamton).

I'd recommend Purchase, Geneseo, and New Paltz.

Re: SUNY PURCHASE
I heard SUNY purchase has a lot of commuters- so if she wants to dorm- she might be more interested in a dorm environment.
SUNY New Paltz has a lot of improvements under way- 2 new dorms (with AC- gasp)- new gym, etc...
I would check it out- lots of people from LI go there too- exit 18 off the NYState thruway
edited to say- although New Paltz is known for art & teaching- I have a double major in liberal arts- history & political science- and had great professors- also - they have a growing business department and just recently started offering MBAs.

Re: SUNY PURCHASE
Binghamton and Geneseo are definitely the two most difficult SUNY's to get into. Albany is really not on the same level as them. Unfortunately, a lot of kids from LI don't want to go to Stony Brook because they want to be truly away from home.
Purchase is a very artsy school - excellent music/art/theatre programs.
New Paltz is also well known for strong programs in these areas, but I think the campus would be a lot more diverse than Purchase would be. NP also has a beautiful college town.
What kind of grades/scores does she have?
