Is it safe to microwave water for baby formula?

I'm fairly new at formula-feeding, since I exclusively BF until I returned to work. I'm still BFing, but we currently supplement with formula, and warm it up for DS under running tap water for a couple of mins... However, I was wondering... would it be safe to warm the water used for the feeding, in the microwave, prior to adding the formula (I know never to micro actual formula since it takes away nutrients)? Or is running under tap, or in a pan with boiling water, the only/best way?

I tried that - the microwave didn't heat it evenly - some spots were hot and some were cold.
So I kept doing it the old fashion way - filled a cup with hot water and let the bottle warm up. I think that way worked the best.

Actually I only warmed up the formula in the beggining - but after 2-3 months i stopped.

I boil a pot of water every night and use that for the formula feedings throughout the day -so the water is room temperature and this method has been working great. Can this be an option?

This would definitely be an option, but DS is a picky eater. I have a gallon of Nursery Water sitting at room temperature, and he won't drink it unless it's warmer. Chat Icon

I didn't think about the "heat pockets" that microwaving does... I guess it wouldn't be a good idea to try. Thanks ladies! Chat Icon

I microwave her water all the time.

With my microwave 7 sec for 2 ounces, 13 for 4.

I use powder, so there are no heat pockets since i shake it. I always tested it to find the right amount of seconds too.

Honestly i couldn't be bothered after months of defrosting BM and warming up BM with hot water.

That's true... you DO have to shake the formula into the water. Hmmmm... anyone else?

I microwave mine too. My friend's ped said the reason it is recommended not to microwave is because of uneaven heating can cause hot pockets that can burn the baby. She said if you shake it afterward its fine. Still, I keep it fairly cool just in case and she will drink it cold too.

I never microwaved formula/water. Used room temperature.

Is it safe? I guess, if you are careful about the hot pockets.
But I personally don't really like to micro much, I just don't trust it.
Especially microwaving plastic. No one has been able to convince me that you are not breaking down the plastics. Chat Icon
