Hey Mommies...Need to know your opinion- Is the Diaper Genie necessary?

Just wondering if I really should register for one or not.
I've asked many mothers and maybe 40% of them said they used it & liked it.Chat Icon
The rest said it wasn't worth it.
TIA for your help.Chat Icon

I love my Diaper Champ! I live in an apartment, so taking out the trash is a pain. The diapers sit in there for 5 days with no smells! Woo hooo!

Everyone told me to get the diaper champ because you don't need special bags for it. All my friends have used it.

No!
My sister had it and used it for a little while and then put it in the attic. I never had one and never missed it. You have to buy all these special bags for it.. I think its a waste of $$.
I still don't like the idea of a dirty diaper sitting in the pail in the babies room.. I don't get why its so hard to throw it out in your regular garbage so at least you get rid of it everyday.Chat Icon

I have the diaper genie and love it, the diapers don't smell. The only drawback is when you have to empty it sometimes its a pain and smells yucky!

I have the Diaper Dekor Plus and love it. No smells and easy to change the bag. The refills last about three months and you don't have to touch the diaper pail to put a diaper in (it has a foot pedal). You can also use it as a regular trash pail when you don't need it for diapers anymore.

I had the Diaper Genie and I hated it. It was a pain to me. Now I have a Diaper Champ, haven't used it yet though.

I have the Neat diaper system. No odors, even when changing the bags.

I registered for it initially and then took it off after talking to some friends. For the stinky diapers we put it in a grocery bag and then the sealed trash can.

We have one of those Diaper things (can't remember which one) and used it a couple of times. We just throw the diapers in the normal trash and it hasn't stunk up the place - at least for the first 5.5 months.

I asked a similar question a few months ago when I was obsessing over my registry and everyone said it's not really worth it. Some people said they liked the Diaper Dekor, but most just said they throw diapers away in the regular trash and take it out every day. Someone also recommended these disposable bags that are scented so you put the diaper in them, tie it up, then put it in the trash and it keeps the kitchen from getting stinky. I've picked up some of them and plan on using them, and it's way more economical.

I was also on the fence about registering for one of these diaper systems...I said I wasn't going to register for one...but wound up putting one on there anyhow.

I registered for the Diaper Champ...read lots of reviews on it and it was rated the best one by the Baby Bargains book. I like that it doesn't require it's own bags, you can use any bag. So, in that sense, why not just throw out the diapers in the regular garbage...because I just don't want my other pails to smell like dirty diapers...

I would register for the blue scented bags. I personally prefer these over the diaper genie or any type of diaper pail.

I agree. We just put the diapers in these bags right in his regular garbage pail and throw that out every 3rd day on garbage night. No smells. I also have the little dispenser for my diaper bag. I dont like to throw dirty diapers (even in the blue bags) in other peoples garbage cans, so I take it home with me and even all day in the diaper bag, it still doesnt smell.

We have the diaper champ. It is great. After 11 months we finally had to give it a good washing, but up until then, no major smells. Also, it takes regular kitchen bags.

I registered for it, and someone from my church gave me one for free, so I'm not sure if we'll use it. I guess we'll try it

Diaper Champ. Regular bags, diapers are separate from the rest of the garbage, no smelliness. I'm happy with it.

IMO, they are not worth it. We have a Diaper Champ and it still smells when you flip the lid to add more. Maybe not at first, but wait until you have a toddler on real foodChat Icon And who wants to change a huge bag of several smelly poopy diapers!?

For now, we are only using the Diaper Champ for wet diapers, and we bag the poopy diapers in the blue baggies and put them in our regular trash that goes out each night.

We just use the a regular garbage pail. For the poopy ones we use the blue bags. We change the pail every 3rd day and have no problems with smell!

Re: Hey Mommies...Need to know your opinion- Is the Diaper Genie necessary?

I have the Diaper Champ and like it. When the baby was small - unless I let diapers sit for a week - rarely did I have bad smells. It did a good job of keeping the smells inside. I like using regular garbage bags and having the convenice of having it right next to the changing tabel in the room. Now that the baby is older and on solids and my baby poops 3-4 times - it isn't working as good. It just needs to be changed more regularly. I think they are worth having.
