Need help regarding a dog situation!

Yesterday I was about to leave my apartment and I opened the door and my dog got out into the hallway and there was another dog out there from my floor not on a leash and they got into a huge fight. I was screaming at my dog as well as the other owner and we could not get the dogs apart. The lady opened her apartment door thinking her dog would run in and they would be able to lock my dog out. Unfortunatley, my dog chased her dog into the apartment and then ran out. It was a TERRIBLE situation. I have a 4 weeks old baby and was terrified and well as very shaken up. The end result was that both dogs had to be taken to the vet. The owner of the dog comes down and expects us to pay his entire vet bill. We get a call last night from the building saying that we either have to get rid of the dog or move. My husband spoke very nicely to the person on the phone and told them he felt it was discrimination that we both are in the wrong and they should get the same treatment as us. He knows the laws since he is in real estate. We were not given any prior notices about the dog, no problems with the dog, etc. The owner of the dog comes and tells us that he expects it paid in full and he will not place a police report. The owner of the dog is also the supers daughter so I am sure they get some extra VIP treatment.

I was so upset, because we are not ready to move just yet and given the fact that we have a newborn at home it would make things a lot harder.

Fast forward to this morning. The owner of the building calls my husband and they resolved things and we are able to keep the dog, but if there is ever another problem we are out!

I was very happy when I heard this news. My husband now feels that to stop any trouble between the people that live on our floor, we should pay the 1000 vet bill and end it all. I think that is totally unfair as we had a vet bill too (only 100), but still. Also, they were in the wrong just as we were because their dog was in the hall without a leash. My husband is also afraid that they will make a police report and god forbid if there was ever a problem with our dog again, they would take the dog.

Any thoughts or suggestions????

No, you should definitely NOT pay the other dog's vet bill. The other dog was off the leash too. Perhaps if the other dog was on a leash, your dog wouldn't have pushed it's way out of the apartment.

In this situation, you are both equally in the wrong and are responsible for your own dog's vet bills. Your dog didn't attack the other dog, they started fighting.

I wouldn't expect someone to pay for my vet bill in this situation.

I agree that you shouldn't have to, but if this is the super's daughter and paying it will enable you to stay a little longer with no problems, I would pay.

Re: Need help regarding a dog situation!

If you want to try, offer to pay half of the vet bill, It's still al ot but 500 is a lot less than 1k

Can you compromise and offer $500 for their dog's bills? I also think you shouldn't have to pay. Its absurd for them to expect it. But as the previous poster said, if its the super's daughter, and she can make your life harder- it may not be worth it to fight, even though you are right.

Same here. I absolutely would not pay. Even if it meant staying longer I wouldn't pay it on principle alone.

I think i would pay too, just so in the future you wont have extra problems... it would be horrible to hafta move or get rid of the dog b/c of this situation... what kinda fight did these dogs have that this vet bill cost them 1K?

I agree- there is no reason why you should pay their vet bill. They should not have their dog roming around without a leash unsupervised.
