You can call up Keyspan and schedule an appt. They will send someone to come out and give you an estimate. They are also running a special and will give you the system for free.

Good luck!

I called Keyspan and told them I was interested, and gave them my address. It was a lot more than I expected... for me it would have been about $8,000 to convert.

About 1K for the burner, 2K for the labor, and then 5K for them to run the gas line to my house. From what they told me it works like this; they will run the first 500 feet of gas line for free; anything past that they charge you for it. So, the nearest gas line that they could 'tap off of' is 1000 feet from my house. So this means that they would run the first 500 feet for free, and then charge me to run the last 500 feet to the house. This was estimated at about 5K. I was really surprised that no one on my block has gas (I live in Lindenhurst.)

Now, if I could get someone at the 500 feet mark to subscribe, their pipe run would be free, and mine would be also, as we both would be within the 500 feet limits. Even the lady on the phone said it was not worth it, and that I should wait 6 months to see if someone closer to the main line or someone else around me converts. I didnt think laying out the 8K would make up for oil prices....

Also, I think they offer 'free burner' promos every once in a while; so that should take off about 1K, but it does not cover labor.

Give them a call, maybe you will have more luck that I did.

Also keep in mind that keyspan's rates are going up due to the fuel prices.

It was just announced this morning that natural gas is increasing their prices 30%.

Everyone told me to switch to gas for my new house and I said to everyone of them just wait, natural gas will go up soon enough too.

we only thought it would be good for the convenience of it... We just bought the house and the first oil delivery was close to $500....plus we're going to have to have it serviced/maintained, etc.. thought gas might be cheaper in the long runChat Icon

500 is alot because it's in one shot, but, just think of it this way, that $500 will get you through a number of months. If you add up what someone pays for Keyspan every month, I'm sure it would come pretty close.

Re: does anyone know what it would cost to switch from oil to gas?

Keyspan ran the gas line for free for us and gave us the new burner for free. We just had to get it installed, which we did privately. I definitely dont think it makes a difference in the long run price wise when it comes to the cost to heat your home. But it is alot more convenient than oil deliveries. We had a massive massive oil tank in the basement. We were able to get rid of that and the pipe that runs from outside as well, which was right at our patio and looked ugly. And we had an old burner too so now we have a nice new system as well. It definitely was worth it for us.

thank you all for the info... I think we'll look into it just to see what the cost would be.. I know the monthly costs would be about the same, but then we would'nt have to worry about getting deliveries, maintanance, etc...

Same for us except our tank was underground and there for 30 years!! We had that dug up and the hole filled it before we had any enviromental problems!!
