exactly! I am trying to figure out if this mechanic is full of crap.
he's not charging me anymore $, and keep giving me extensions since my inspection expired on 9/30. if anything, it's costing him $ every time he has to hook it up to the emissions machine.

if you feel your mechanic is being a little shady, my family uses this great shop called auto zam in wantagh on jerusalem avenue. the owner, jimmy, is very nice and honest.

Take it to another place. My MIL has the same problem. It doesn't pass at all service stations.

So was hers... She finally found a shop where hers would pass.

I never heard of such a thing I just looked all over online and found nothing about new emissions law for NYS.
does anyone know a mechanic they can ask?
I called DH, he's running over to the svc dept to ask. He hasn't heard of this "new law".
He also recommends going somewhere else to have it tested. Every machine is different. It just means you'll have to pay again.

Well...I don't know what to tell you. $37 isn't much if you consider the possibilities of your car never passing and this mechanic charging you an arm and a leg to repair something that doesn't need to be repaired....
Just a thought...

My car was inspected yesterday - it's a 95 Pathfinder. If that thing can pass inspection, I'd say you should call DMV Division of Vehicle Safety Services at (518) 474-8943 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:15 p.m. weekdays. http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/vehsafe.htm#einspect

I just called and they told me there is no new law and that if it fails again today that I should get a copy of the receipt to see why exactly it isn't passing.

My car is at the shop for THIRD time in 2 weeks today b/c it cannot pass inspection under some new law. something about "knocking"
the mechanic told me it's a PIA and that many cars don't pass until after the car has been driven for another 200-500 miles after is fails the 1st inspection
UGH! WHAT A PAIN
For whatever reason, the computer gets a misreading from the emissions (or something like that...I'll have to ask my DH.)
We went through something similar with our truck. We had to drive it around for so many miles inorder for it to pass inspection.

Re: Anyone hear of the new NYS vehicle inspection laws?
that happened to my car too.
new law passed in May 05, but service stations didn't have to comply until 12/31/05, which is why you didn't have this problem last time you got an inspection.
My car has a defect in the computer system- the cam shaft positioner sensor isn't correctly hooked up within the computer system, and that causes my "check engine soon" light to remain lit at all times. It was lit when I bought it (from a private owner), and it was lit and PASSED 3 inspections (02, 03, 04), but failed inspection in 05 because the damn light is on.
There is nothing wrong with the thing, but the light stays on.
