Hey Teachers..career advice
So, I passed the exam I needed but trouble is, for alternate route, no one will hire me without experience. Understandable. I am going to volunteer in the meantime with kids - any suggestions? Library? Girl Scouts? TIA!

What do you mean by alternate route? If you mean getting experience without being in a school, then here are some. Work in a library or book store, especially the kids section. Get to know every kids book out there. Tutor. Sadly, that is all my brain is thinking of right now.

Re: Hey Teachers..career advice
what if you get yourself on the sub list at a few districts. i think you just need 60 college credits to get a sub certification. over the summer a lot of districts have an extended school year program for their special ed kids. it might be a little late now, but maybe you could get a job as an assistant. you could do that during the school year too. private special ed schools are also always looking for assistants. you could also check the educational services commissions in the counties near you if you're interested in the special ed population. you're in nj right? fm me if i can help at all.

Also teaching assistant is not a bad start....not such great pay but gets your foot in the door and your probably get benefits depending on the district....I did it and it was a good experience

ACADEMIC CAMPS!!!
FH has done this for the past few years (same boat as you - passed all exams, but no "official" experience, other than student teaching.) at Stony Brook University Summer Camp. Pay is pretty good.
Last year, when he started subbing, he got on the lists of several districts, so he was working 3-4 days a week. It was pretty good - one of the districts liked him, and offered him the permanent building sub position.
He did that for half a year, now he'll have his own classroom in September!!
You just have to get your foot in the door. Hang in there!

Re: Hey Teachers..career advice
what about teaching a night class or something. You know those community classes that are offered at high schools or community centers? Do you have a craft or talent?
Try Kaplan or Sylvan learning centers too....and you'll get paid

Thanks everyone - great advice! I just have to get the ball rolling. I would LOVE to sub - I am just worried I won't get enough work. I would have to quit my job and take a chance...which I can't do right now with a mortgage to pay.
