I'm sooo upset/furious...long!

I am going to make a loooong story as short as I can...

Since my 6 week pp check up I have been on the minipill (since I am still nursing). I had the perscription filled at the CVS by me. Well - a week or two after that my insurance changed and CVS no longer took it - so I went to a local very small pharmacy to have them transfer the perscription.

Fine...no problem - I take the mini pill no worries...and last week I went back to refill the perscription. Well I noticed the pill he gave me was different...so I called him to verify I got the right thing - and he said that I did...I asked 3 times if it was the minipill and that I am nursing and he assured me he gave me the right thing.

So today I go to my ob/gyn and I said to her - I dont think this is right - aren't these sugar pills? (minipill doesn't have sugar pills) I swear her face went white - she said not only have I been taking the regular pill - but it has a VERY high dose of estrogen (which I shouldn't be having at all!!)

I am so upset - she advised me to call my pediatrician to make them aware and talk to them about it....not to mention I have been sooo sick this week - I took a pregnancy test yesterday because I thought for sure I was pregnant (negative thank goodness!) I had all the symptoms.

In addition I mentioned to my DH that my milk supply seems to have disappeared overnight (which is a problem since I am nursing twice a day still) - the dr. told me that is from the pill so I am not even sure I can nurse now because I dont think she is getting enough - if any milk!!!!!!!!!!!!!

eta: my dr. said the pharmacist never even transferred the perscription - so he technically filled it without ANY paper work at all...oy!
My Dr. told me that she suspects he might not even be a real pharmacist - can you believe that?? She asked me all sorts of questions about him so she can look into the situation...what a mess...long story short I just hope it doesn't effect the baby (besides the nursing issue). I don't know whether to cry - or strangle the guy!!!!!!!

OMG - I would FURIOUS too!!! What an irresponsible pharmacist (if he even IS one)!! I would definitely look into what can be done about that pharmacist. How dangerous!!!

I hope everything is okay with the baby and that your milk supply can come back!

There are state licensing boards for this. I would call the DA, in fact. This is criminal if he filled an Rx without proper paperwork and if he gave you the wrong pills. Holy Cow.

I am sure the baby is fine but I would be so upset!!!

I think calling the DA's office is a great idea. I would also tlak to a personal lawyer...if your milk is drying up as a result of this jerk's laziness then you and your baby deserve something in return....its not right that he robbed you of that special bond of nursing.

OMG I would be so LIVID! I agree with everyone else, call the DA, not just for you and Talia but before he severely hurts someone. Can you imagine him giving the wrong heart medication to someone or other drugs that can have severations to each other!

I am sure everything is ok with Talia. I hope that you can get your milk back up.

I can't even imagine how livid I would be. I think I'd be writing every regulation board out there.

I'm sure Talia will be ok - keep in mind the mini-pill is relatively new so before that moms were put back on the pill.

Well as a pharmacist I am so sorry this happened to you. Whoever you dealt with when you thought there was an error handled it totally wrong. I mean birth control packages all look totally different so he/she would totally know if you go the wrong one. It sounds like they didn't even check.
Every pharmacist should know they aren't foolproof. As much as I hate to admit it I have made my fair share of mistakes but I have always owned up to them, apologized and done my best to make sure the patient was OK with how the situation was resolved. Thank goodness none of my mistakes have been major but that is always my biggest fear at the end of a work day.
If he did in fact fill it without transferring it with CVS that is definitely illegal. One way to find out for sure is to either call CVS and just ask them if it was transferred or try to refiill it through them and they would probably tell you that they can't refill it because it was transferred.
I don't know how much the DA office would do about a drug error or him not legally transferring the prescription but the State Board of Pharmacy will certainly care about both. You should contact the NYS Board of Pharmacy about this.
Talia should be OK especially since it was only one month but I would still be really ******. I always double check all of my prescriptions in the store. I actually smell her liquids since I know what they are supposed to smell like. I am so paranoid now that I am a mom and I know that a pharmacist can make a mistake.
Oh and they should totally refund you and your insurance for this prescription!! That is what we do at the company I work for when we have a drug error. We also have an internal error reporting system so that our corporate office can monitor what types of errors are made and how many a particular pharmacist makes.
Is there anyway you can pump a bunch for a few days to get your supply back up for those feedings?
Again I am so sorry this happened and how it was handled. I hope that everything gets worked out and that the ped. says Talia will be fine.

Re: I'm sooo upset/furious...long!

another CVS horror story! I have heard soooo many bad things about pharmacists there, I think they get too busy and rush too much.

I always fill my RX's at waldbaums b/c my friend works there and is a supervisor and I trust her. YOu do have to be really careful.

My husband used to make phone of me of why do I keep going back to Massapequa, well N. Massapequa for the pharmacy but after screw ups elsewhere now he doesnt start w/ me anymore :)

I too am a pharmacist, and I am so sorry this happened to you. I agree with moneybride that the error was handled inappropriately. You can check the website listed in this post to see if the person filling the prescription has a valid license. What made your doctor suspect that he isn't? I think you and Talia will be fine, it is just awful that you have to go through this. Again, as a pharmacist, I apologize for what happened. I agree with pumping more to again increase your supply. Feel better. Chat Icon
