Black. White.

Did anybody watch last night?

I think the show is going to be pretty interesting. I thought that the daughter from the white family seemed very smart and precocious even, I wonder how old she is.

What I noticed was that the father of the Black family seemed to feel that this was more a learning experience for the White family, not him. Which I don't think is very open minded of him. He seems to be looking for only the "benefits" of being White whereas he is emphasizing that the White father, Bruce, should be looking for the "bad" aspects of being Black.

I just hope they do more role reversals in future episodes. For example, when he went into the shoe store and said that he had NEVER had a shoe salesman help him put the shoe on before, I kind of wish Bruce, the white father would have gone in there after him, in his Black makeup and seen if the salesman helped him in the same way.

I think it's going to be very thought provoking though.

Re: Black. White.

I did not watch this, but my problem with this show and all other "reality" shows is that they skew the "reality" aspect in the favor of what they think viewers want to see. Like I said, I didn't see it, but I can probably guess what the whole show will be like.

I wanted to watch it & I totally forgot. But the show does look very interesting. I'm surprised Ice produced it. He's come a long way from his NWA days.

Re: Black. White.

I saw it and I have a problem with one thing. the black family had a problem with the white guy saying the "N" word. I understand that its a very bad word, BUT, it seems if 2 black guys say it...its "OK" but when the white guy, in his black makeup said it, it wasnt good! Chat Icon I thought the whole "experiment was to get in to the other race....and see how they live. If you cant act and speak like them, then its not a true test.

I totally agree with you. There is NO way to know if the salesman would have helped the balck man any different than the white guy if they didnt do it the same way!!!

I did watch the show, but you are right. People are already going in there w/ preconcieved notions. That's not good.

As far as the "N" word it's like me saying "spic" and then being w/ some freinds and have them say it who are not Latinos. I'm sure it would bother me, but I don't throw that word around because it then gives everyone I'm with the right to do so. IMO

Re: Black. White.

Im not going to watch it only b/c I have a feeling a show like this is going to make things worse b/t the 2 races. I understand if the show is to make each race see how the other lives but with going in with preconceived notions already makes the show predictable; b/c now like with the shoe incidence, now its going to be portrayed that only 1 race gets treated with dignity when shopping for shoes, and I dont think thats correct. but I hope Im wrong and something positive comes out of it, but with so much hatred in this world( especially now with 9-11) , I dont see it.Chat Icon

Re: Black. White.

this show is too stereotypical....i turned it off after watching 10 minutes....

nobody is gonna go up to the White Guy that turned black saying "What Up Ni**ga....."
"Some one is gonna tell me that, and im gonna be cool with it." "Now I can call people My Brother?" ..Chat Icon

***...my white friend calls my brother all the time

i thought the show will be more of an eye opener but it just shows the uncommon knowledge that one has.

I agree with Janice...depending on how the show goes it could actually make things worse. I hoping it doesn't. From some of the previews, it looks like the white family -- the daughter Rose, in particular -- start to feel the effects and is not liking it.

I just would for them to play it truly fair.... take the Black father in white makeup and send him in to a predominantly Black neighborhood, and try to get a job THERE. I hope they play it this way but now that you are telling me who produced the show, I don't think they will. I have a feeling it's going to be a one-sided portrayal. Chat Icon

Re: Black. White.

I'll start by saying I did not watch the show. But, about going in with preconceived ideas......I think that is part of the point of the show. I read a few articles about it and they were saying that one of the points they were trying to make is that everyone has preconceived ideas about what it's like to be in the other person's shoes. And they said they chose people who were moderate in their political beliefs and thought of themselves as open minded as the cast because they wanted to show that as open minded as one might be about race, there would still be things that shock you about being the other race.

I think the show was good, and will be interesting.

However, I feel as if they should have them doing the same things. As mentioned before, I think the white guy who looked black should have also gone into the same shoe store and see if he got the same service. I also think that the white guy who looked black should have went to the gold course and seen if everyone was just as friendly with him.

As far as the n word goes, I am black, and it is still not ok to say it to each other. I would never use that word, outside of a circle of close friends. I have been around other black people and had the word slip out of my mouth, and they told me they were offended by it. It also depends on the area of the country. I travel a lot for my job, and a lot of my friends went to colleges around the country, and told me that it is NOT as acceptable amongst people as it is here in NY.

It would also be interested to see how whites are treated in a predominantly black neighborhood. I think it would be good for the black family to experience that, because I know that they would be treated differently. Maybe have the white son enrolled in school where minorities are the majority. Will the show go there, maybe not. They want to give people a sense of the country, and realistically in this country, blacks are not a majority. But I can tell you right now, where I grew up, if a white person walked down the street, they would be looked at completely different then someone black.

Furthermore, I think both the black father, and the white father wants the white father to get mistreated EVERY time. Realistically, that's not how it works. I think they are both wrong in that aspect. Does it happen, yes. Does it happen to one person in every situation, of course not. But is racism alive, sure is. You saw it when the black guy was working in the bar and the customer was making the comments about how that was the last true white neighborhood, and its safe to raise your kids there because of the lack of minority presence.

Outside of the show, to hit even closer to home, if you go onto newsday.com today, you will read an article about the Huntinton Townhouse being torn down and building 180 condos. On newsday's website readers can post comments, and multiple comments mentioned that these condo's should not be "affordable housing" and that they need to make them expensive because people don't want more minorities moving in. In 2006, its sad that this still happens.
