Got my blood work results from the Dr. today
On CD2, my FSH level is 12.7 He says this is considered "Premenopausal Approaching" and so next cycle -- we will start with clomid and estrogen. 3 months that way and if it doesn't work on to IVF.
Boy am I glad I insisted on getting bloodwork done.

At least you have some progress - even if it wasn't exactly what you wanted to hear.
If you have any Clomid questions, please let me know. I'm starting my fourth round today (the first time at 100 mg).
Good luck!!

Re: Got my blood work results from the Dr. today
I copied and pasted a post I had on infertility.
Clomid is an ovulation induction med that's taken orally. You take it usually days 3-7 of your cycle or days 5-9. What clomid does, is it signals all the estrogen tissue receptors in your body. It fools the body into think, that it's not making enough estrogen. Your FSH hormone then starts to work harder and pump out more FSH in your system, so that the follicules grow faster. An unmedicated cycle most women only produce one dominant/mature follicule. In other words, only one grows quickly and then ovulates. If you are on clomid more than one follie, may reach maturity, which gives you a high chance of pregnancy because there are more than one egg being released. Since clomid fools all the estrogen receptor tissues in your body, it has some negative side effects. The cervix for one, has estrogen tissues. That's how you get cervical mucus. The estrogen in your body when raised, produces the mucus. If your body is fooled to think, there is no estrogen. Then the cervical mucus can 'dry' up. The supply of mucus can cease. There are also estrogen tissue receptors in your uterus. Once again, that can decrease the growth of uterine lining (thining it out) because estrogen is not being pumped out. Estrogen helps the lining to thicken. So while clomid helps speed up ovulation it can also affect some other parts of fertility. If you do IUI, you don't need cervical mucus, because an IUI bypasses the cervix. The sperm is placed directly into the uterus...through the cervix. However, if your dh has good sperm count, I think bding before and after an IUI is a good thing to do because....IUI's aren't that successful . Now Femara works very much like clomid....except....it's what you call, a selective estrogen receptor moderator. Basically the drug only selects certain estrogen tissue to work with. It works with breast tissue, and it works with ovarian tissue (the follicules). Femara does not afffect, the cervix or the uterine tissue. Your CM will not dry up while taking femara and your uterine lining will not thin out. Femara was actually a med that was only used for post menopausal women, who had breast cancer. It helped prevent cancer growth in the breast tissue. Several years ago it was finally, passed as an infertility medication because of how well it also works with the ovaries. If your doctor is conservative, or not updated on newer meds, he may only want to deal with clomid. Clomid has been given out to women who can't conceive easily since about the 1960's....maybe even 50's.

Re: Got my blood work results from the Dr. today
I asked Dr. about Femara, he says it is a hormone supplement and not what I need. I will also be taking estrogen.
Is this the wrong approach???

Re: Got my blood work results from the Dr. today
Femara is an ovulation inducing med...however your ob/gyn may not be familiar with it.
I think clomid and estrogen is a good way to start.

Yes, it is pill you swallow (or two depending on the dosage).
Side effects so far are hot flashes and moodiness. There's a whole Clomid thread on infertility that you can check out.
And Michelle handled the what does it DO part!

Re: Got my blood work results from the Dr. today
Thanks Donna (Dm Donna), that makes me feel more optimistic....which is what I need right now!!!
I am going to try acupuncture again, this time with a specialist in fertility who a friend has used successfully...... or, I am just hoping to get a BFP this cycle and not have to deal with ANY of this stuff! It is still possible with this FSH level, no????

Re: Got my blood work results from the Dr. today
Good luck to you. Fortunately for me I had no side effects to Clomid. I know that is a shock to many of you out there.
BUt keep being pushy, I just finished my 5th IUI cycle and am moving on to IVF. I kinda wish I did that sooner.

Re: Got my blood work results from the Dr. today
It sounds like you're making some progress
what was your E2 (estradiol) #? that is also important when dealing with FSH. If you have any questions about it just let me know, I had readings of 14, 20, 11.5 and 11.6. I've been able to lower it through acupuncture and diet.
There are some great message boards for women with FSH issues.
Much baby dust to you!!!

He didn't measure E2, that's part of the reason why I have decided NOT to go on clomid and to see an RE - Dec. 8..... I will also be going to an acupuncturist again, this time one who specializes in fertility..!
Thanks ladies.
