Vegetarians

I haven't gone to the doctor yet, so I am unsure what is okay.

I am still eating dairy(eggs, milk, and cheese)

But as a protein source, I usually eat seitan.

Is seitan and tofu allowed>?

Did you dr. tell you to take anything extra?

TIA

Re: Vegetarians

I am not a vegetarian anymore, however, I only eat chicken, and honestly, it's not all that appealing to me. As long as you take your prenatals, you should be fine. Also, tofu and seitan are supposed to be fine, you just may find they bother your stomache in the beginning. I eat lots of yogurt and cheese and eggs, and I'm doing fine at 30 weeks. Definitely talk to your doctor, though. They'll probably know more once you get your bloodwork done.

Re: Vegetarians

I'm vegetarian, but I eat fish... I addressed my concerns with my doctor at the beginning of my pregnancy and he said it was totally fine. I ate a lot of fish (salmon and tilapia), beans, eggs and tofu during my pregnancy, and my little girl is healthy as can be. In fact, she's off the charts for weight and height and our pediatrician keeps marveling at how healthy, alert and advanced she is... I tell everyone it just goes to show that being a vegetarian creates healthy, beautiful, smart babies! Chat Icon

Re: Vegetarians

thanks Beth, the only think that kills me is that I am allergic to seafood. but if you had tofu that is great news.

Re: Vegetarians

At my first appointment I told my dr I was a vegetarian and that I guess I would have to start having to eat meat. He said why would you do that, just make sure you get enough protein. He sugggested cheese/dairy products, beans, tofu, nuts, eggs.
I eat cheese in every meal, and beans, nuts, and other dairy often. I also eat whole wheat products, which usually contain alot more protein than white. I am really picky and could never eat tofu, but that is a great protein source. Eggs are great too, but I don't like those either.
I did try to eat meat a few times and it was torture trying to get it down! It is just not for me!
I was really stressed in the beggining about getting enough protein, I would count the grams, I was driving myself crazy!Chat Icon

That is me totally. I am gagging down hard boiled eggsChat Icon I am so worried about the protein grams. I considered eating meat again, but the words on the menu "juicy chicken" made me sick to my stomach. I would do it if I had to, but if I don't that is fine with me. thanks!

Chat Icon I am feeling so bad. I think I just have to feel guilty about something. Why am I different? Why am I making it more complicated? But eating that chicken, the thought of it was too much. Then there is bird flu and mad cow. Too much to think about

Re: Vegetarians

I bought my SIl a great book called your Vegetarian Pregnancy, she said it was helpful to figure out what things to increase for the baby. I found it on Amazon.com.

im not PG yet, but am TTC ( and a vegetarian)...Talked to the Dr. today and she said basically like what was mentioned above, when TTC and during PG...Add a lot of beans, eggs, switch to whole wheat based pasta and breads and grains and make sure you get enough vitamins from veggies/fruits.

I cant eat Tofu either , so I was worried I wouldnt be getting enough protein, she said once Im PG, she would be testing me monthly for Anemia to be on the safe side.
