Am I missing something - Glen Cove Murder
I have been watching News 12 this morning, and I feel that I am missing something. This guy was arrested, I am not debating that. What I don't understand is that this morning, people are outraged that he was a student teacher in a school about 2 years ago or so. They keep saying I can't believe that they didn't do a backround check on him, cause they don't do backround check on student teachers. What would the backround check show - that he had it in him that he could kill someone? Is part of a backround check a psychological test? Any light you can shed on this would be great - cause like I said I feel like I am missing something or just don't understand something.

I believe they said they did do a background check but there were not police records before 2004.

I work in a school where everyone from maintenance through psychiatrists are fingerprinted thus leading to background checks. In this day and age, you cant take chances.

Re: Am I missing something - Glen Cove Murder
I am a teacher and I know that as part of the prerequesites for becoming a teacher I had to get finger printed and have a background check, and I believe that is the norm now.
I don't know about student teaching, but I know that even parent volunteers in my school have to do the same thing. They can't volunteer in classrooms or on lunch duty unless they have been fingerprinted.

But even with fingerprinting and background checks, which are necessary, if he hasn't been caught, it won't matter, kwim?

Re: Am I missing something - Glen Cove Murder
generally a psychological exam is not part of a background check, unless it's for the PD or something of that nature (ie you'll be carrying a weapon)
the reason people are saying that is mostly b/c they don't really know what they are talking about. this guy could have been a Boy Scout in the past, sometimes people hide things well...sometimes they don't get caught.
the thing is, the idea of someone seemingly normal, who was working with KIDS, turning around and commiting such an act is terrifying, so you want to think there was some way someone could have seen it coming. usually the answer is NO.

Re: Am I missing something - Glen Cove Murder
When I student taught there was no background check....
But who knows if his would have shown anything yet.....the other murders they are investigating in CA and FL are unsolved and now they are putting two and two together and thinking he was involved

Re: Am I missing something - Glen Cove Murder
When I student taught (over ten years ago) there certainly weren't any background checks. But like others have pointed out, if he hadnt committed any crime at that point, nothing would show up anyway!

Re: Am I missing something - Glen Cove Murder
I have girls who just finished student teaching and they were fingerprinted.
The article I read said that the university he went to wouldn't give out an info, so he may have been fingerprinted.
In a related story I read that Mark Karr (the Jon Benet azzhole) had a day care in his home
