Starting Cereal

Just wanted to know when everyone started their baby on rice cereal? and what time of day?

I think Noah is ready for something else at night, but not quite sure of what to do...

Re: Starting Cereal

DD started at 4 months. I started at dinner time, with just about a tablespoon mixed with about 4 tbsp of formula. After a week or so, I started giving it to her in the morning as well, and then started mixing fruit in with it.

Re: Starting Cereal

Dr. told us to start at 4 months.. tried it and Jacen wouldn't even open his mouth to let me get the spoon in and cried everytime I tried. So, I waited until 5 months and since then he's been doing great. I give it to him in the AM though.

Re: Starting Cereal

My baby is 4 months and we haven't started cereal yet but many of my friends on another website with babies the same age have. Most of them started around dinner time mixed with formula when their babies stopped sleeping through the night, seemed hungrier more often (longer than a growth spurt), were able to somewhat sit up, had good head support and didn't have that reflex where they push food out with their tongue anymore. If you want to talk with any of these ladies (they are wonderful and have been a big help to me) you can check out www.misfitmoms.com message boards. I am planning on holding out until my baby is 6 months but we will see. Every baby is different and different doctors recommend different things too. HTH.

There are so many mixed messages out there...if you speak to someone who feels strongly about BF'ing, they say 6 months. I am only pumping and have been for 4 and a half months and feel that I can't give Noah enough to eat. He is sleeping through the night (most of the time) and I feel he would benefit from a little something extra. I have given him cereal twice now and he seems to be okay with it...so lets see how it goes!!!

Re: Starting Cereal

Good luck with everything. I pumped and bf and I know pumping can be rough. I find myself pumping less and less these days. I'm impressed you've been just pumping for so long. Kudos to you!

Thats great that he seems ok with the cereal. Chat Icon I agree there are too many differing opinions out there. Ultimately its your decision. I'm sure Noah will let you know when he is ready. If he does well with it then he is ready, if not then hold off for a bit.

I know many ebf women who are also trying to go til 6 months like me but I'm not ebfing. I have supplemented occasionally w/ formula and I've found just giving the bottle of formula at night when my supply is at its lowest helps him sleep longer at night. Therefore I'm not in a big rush... but I'm taking the wait n' see approach.

Let us know how it goes!

Re: Starting Cereal

I tried Alyson at about 3 1/2 months and she wasn't ready. Waited to a few days before her 4 month b-day and she took to it well. I also went from a night time cereal feeding, to starting at breakfast and it was so much better. They recommend doing it in the AM or lunch so you can monitor for reactions.

Right now Alyson gets cereal (4TBSP) mid morning...9/10am, lunch she gets 1 container of Stage 1 (fruit or veggie as we are trying one at a time) and cereal at her 4/5pm feeding. Once she tries all the Stage 1, I think I may do baby food with cereal at her morning and afternoon feedings, and bottles in between.

She's still eating every 2 1/2-3 hrs and wakes up once in the wee hrs of the AM (3-6am) for a 7 oz bottle.
