Moms with babies w/ milk allergies.....

For my DS both Nutramigen and Alimentum has not done the trick with his belly. He still has microscopic blood in his stool so yesterday the gastro started him on Neocate.

Anyone have any feedback on this formula and did your child have to go in for further testing????

Thanks.

Hi - Im sorry I don't have any info on Neocate - but my daughter is on Alimentum for the past 2 months.

Im just wondering how did you know there was microscopic blood in the stool? The doctor just switched over my daughter to Alimentum and she's had no further tests etc....she has been gaining weight etc....so ive just guessed all has been well.....

Her biggest symptom before Alimentium was the blood in her stool - and I've always wondered if it was necessary for her to see a gastrointernest....

you need to do a stool guiac, you put a little smear of poop on a card and it is sent out to a lab and tested. my daughter had a severe dairy allergy and she only started dairy at 20 months, it is a tough road but totally manageable. i was lucky because I BF'd and just cut all dairy ot of my diet so she was not exposed. When she started solids and hit 12 months it was tough monitoring everything especially since any dairy would casue her to vomit all over the place. I have only heard good things about all the specialty formulas, is your insuracne covering it?

No, my insurance isn't covering it Chat Icon

My son is gaining weight and is generally healthy (20.7 pounds at 5.5 months) so the allergy isn't that severe. He doesn't have blood in every diaper so its a good and bad thing.

What set me off was the giant glob of mucus in his diaper a few weeks ago. I ran to the ped and she tested it. I then went to the gastro and we tried Alimentum but he was sooooooooooo cranky and he was up all night long.

The other day I brought a bunch of diapers to the ped and out of 3 only 1 tested positive so I spoke to the gastro and now we're on the Neocate for a week just to try it. I had enough free samples that should last me to save some $$$. At the end of this week I have to bring his diapers back to the ped and then call the gastro with the results.

Next step is the scope up the hiney and testing his insides for allergies I believe. Obviously we're trying to avoid it but after 2 days on this new formula I think its inevitable. Hoping that I see a change in him by Thursday aka "D_Day".

My parents and in-laws have been wonderful. I mean this stuff is $128 per case (4, 14oz powder cans) - its pricey. But they all said they'd help us out b/c I'm a SAHM and we have money but the extra that they'll kick in is going to be a HUGE help.

if your doc writes a script for the formula and you bring it to your pharmacy, they will hold it behind the counter and you will sign for it as if it were a rx, mostv ins. companies cover Neocate. If not, call your ins company and fight the fact that they either pay for the formula or they may be faced with costly specialist bills as well as hospital bills due to your son's special circumstances which will get worse without specialized care/meds.

Re: Moms with babies w/ milk allergies.....

My daughter isn't able to tolerate any formula except Nutramigen. And when my other daughter was a baby, she had to be on the same formula as well. It cost double of what the other formulas are but its the only thing they are able to take.
My daughter still has bad reflux on that one and my other daughter was exactly the same but at least she's not crying in pain like she was with the other ones.
Our insurance wouldn't cover it.Chat Icon

Thanks for the infoChat Icon My daughter has a doctors appt next week - and I will ask her peditrician about this - im surprised she didn't request a stool guiac. My insurance Aetna doesn't cover the formula as well. I've actually called to fight it several times and the representatives told me that unless my daughter was on life support and needed this formula etc... then there was nothing they could do Chat Icon I couldn't believe that! Especially since I know of some insurance companies that will cover it. My friend suggested I go to a gastrointernest and have him fight it for me and send the insurance company a letter requesting the formula be covered - apparently this worked for a friend of mine.

I would definately have the dr write a note saying that because of "allergies" or something that is the only formula your baby can have. Good luck.

Lori - Try the ready to feed. Some children are allergic to the powder and not the ready to feed, since the powder has corn in it. I have read up on it and it is very common.

Also my insurance said they would not apy for it, but I contacted Apria Helathcare and they got them to pay fro it with a perscription. The RTF comes right to my door each month, and I have to pay 10% of the cost per my plan.

If you need the number to Apria Healthcare let me know.

Re: Moms with babies w/ milk allergies.....

Let me give you all some info, I am a social worker and also have a private practice so I deal with ins companies at least 2-3/day, I do discharge planning, med coverage, etc and if you bother them enough insuranc comanpies will cover EVERYTHING, or at least a high proportion of the cost. You could not imagine what I get some insurance companies to cover, i got one insurance company to cover gluten-free pancake mix for one of my patients because he had celiac disease, if you explain it as a quality of life issue and that their out of pocket cost for treatment/care will increase then most companies bend, you HAVE TO speak with a supervisor. Don't give up, espeically since most of you have many more months of formula use, the more you fight the ins. companies the better chances you have of getting what you want. Let me knopw how else I can help, I hate ins companies, they are run my big-wigs or by non-medical professionals who sit behind a desk and look at a claim and deny it for no good reason (no offense to any ins office workers) but I really think they need nurses and docs and socail workers to approve and deny claims.

My daughter is on Nutramigen and insurance does cover it Chat Icon . It even gets delivered to my house. The medical term was formula intolerance.

I would fight them not covering the special formulas..but the insurance company refused to pay one penny of my lacation consultant payment or breat pump rentals because they honestly just don't care how or if you feed your baby. They only care about the money.

My son is on nutramigen and my insurance co pays for MOST of it. I pay $90 for a months worth of formula. Its better than paying full, the damn stuff is so $$$$. My Ped opened up such a mouth to the ins co on the phone demanding they cover most of it due to formula intolerance and a milk protein/soy allergy.

Re: Moms with babies w/ milk allergies.....

I wish our insurance paid for our formula.
They refused it when we asked them to cover it for our older daughter two years ago and its the only one she could tolerate. Now our little one can only tolerate Nutramigen also and its so expensive.

When one of my brothers was baby my mother had this same probelm with formula. She had tried so many that she eventually made her own. She found the receipe in Dr. Spock (this was 18 years ago) but it did the trick.
