upstate NY wedding - repost from FHF
Next weekend Im going to a wedding in upstate NY. I didnt know where they had registered so I emailed a mutual friend. He said they had not registered anywhere, but they could use knick- knacks. ???? I had planned to just give them a check, but it sounds like people will bring wrapped gifts to the wedding.
Has anyone gone to a wedding upstate? I did a search but there were posts that were a little old - from 2 years ago.
Has anyone had a more recent experience? Should I bring a gift ?
any thoughts??? TIA

upstate... my DH is from up there and money is not really "normal". He is from up by Binghamton in the sticks. Maybe get them something from a store up there with the gift receipt so they can return it if need be.

Re: upstate NY wedding - repost from FHF
I was at a wedding in Rochester last weekend. Plenty of people gave money but there was a large gift table.
It was a very different type of wedding than I was used to. They had all of the food served first. After dinner and cake was the dancing - not intermittently between courses. After about an hour or two of dancing they had a mini Viennese. It was like having dessert twice.

It is fine to give money, but it is certainly not the "norm" as it is down here. If both the bride and groom are originally from upstate, you can probably expect a very casual, laid-back wedding.

I just wanted to add that when I DH's friends and family came down here for our wedding they thought the cocktail hr was it, they couldnt believe there was more It was funny to see their faces when the matrede said the cocktail hr was over and now it was time for the reception.

Re: upstate NY wedding - repost from FHF
My cousin that lives in Monticello planned his wedding in a month. Their invite was "word of mouth" I think only one family member went to his wedding. From the pictures that I saw it was so laid back. He wore a simple suit and she had on a white dress with a veil.
His sister is supposedly getting married in August. No one has seen or heard of any invitation. No date was even set, no plans are made, and every time you speak to anyone else in the family no one knows anything about this supposed wedding.
Weddings outside of the city the "norm" is generally a wrapped gift. DH's family that lives out of state brought a wrapped gift which I thought was odd but turned out to be such an awesome gift. My cousins in Maryland their were tons of wrapped gifts. And my mom's friends in Texas said wrapped gifts is the thing and envelopes are not that common.

I had the same thing happen. For months after our wedding, I had a friend from Syracuse telling me that she and her boyfriend could not believe that the cocktail hour wasn't the main event and how they were blown away when the maitre D announced the reception.

My cousin from California was like that too. I had a feeling he would be since at his wedding I thought the buffet dinner was the cocktail hour.

I agree and since they aren't registered I wouldn't want to buy them a gift they don't need or don't like. I may sound snotty but I'm pretty picky and not a knick knack person. I hate to admit it but I returned most of the non registry gifts I got.
Also, who can't use cash?

Re: upstate NY wedding - repost from FHF
I'm from Poughkeepsie (upstate but not really reall upstate), and everyone always gives checks. We are going to a wedding in Ithaca this month and giving a check (or a donation to a charity they requested people give to in lieu of gifts). I went to Cornell and have had friends get married in Ithaca with weddings more elaborate than Long Island ones.
I would give $.

Re: upstate NY wedding - repost from FHF
upstate is like a wedding anywhere BUT NY....bring a gift. Maybe a small slow cooker and a cookbook? Do they already live together?
Maybe a candle centerpiece and some picture frames?

Thats another reason I want to give a check. They already live together and I have no idea what they need or like.

I didn't know that! I live in Buffalo! Born and raised! Where are you from?
I agree, money isn't abnormal at a wedding. Although, I do have to warn you the actual wedding may not be the same as LI, we are not completely different creatures here and do like money for weddings too.
