Is LIJ the same as North Shore University at Manhasset

I'm so confused! LOL. I went on the NSUH website and it brought me to LIJ, but then when I search one doctor it comes up LIJ and another it comes up NSUH. So does that mean their different places for L&D?

NO. They are two separate Hospitals. NSUH is in Manhasset and LIJ is in New Hyde Park. They are part of the "North Shore Health System" along with a bunch of other hospitals.
ETA: All of the hospitals in the NS health system are all very different. My mom has been in Syosset, Glen Cove, Manhasset and LIJ so I have seen how all of them are. IMHO, I am impartial to Manhasset.

So when my Dr. was kinda bragging about LIJ that really doesnt mean anything does it?

I really havent heard anything about L&D at LIJ? Is it decent?

I know of two people who have delievered there and have not had any issues. They have a NICU which is a plus, just in case.

Re: Is LIJ the same as North Shore University at Manhasset

My friend delivered at LIJ last weekend. She said the nurses and experience was nice. Only one nurse in the room along with the doctor, the room was clean and calming - and kind of like a hotel room. They even had a TV on the whole time she was in labor to watch in between contractions.

She requested a private room after giving birth and was granted it ($300 out of pocket per night) - it's on a first come first serve basis.

I have heard they are redoing the preterm area to update it a bit (friends husband said it was a bit shabby, not gross or anything, just older looking) and next they are planning on redoing the rooms.

I heard that there are 4 people to a regular room and there are no bathrooms inside the rooms. The bathrooms are in the hallway and each rooms shares the bathrooms with other rooms. I don't know first hand if this is true, but my friend told me this was the reason she requested the private room (with private bathroom).

WOW thanks Elbee!!!! I will definitly check both out then- esp if that bathroom situation is right, that bothers me.

Re: Is LIJ the same as North Shore University at Manhasset

That is correct about the bathroom. A couple of my friends delivered there and they told me the same thing..

I delivered at North Shore Manhasset. I had a regular room but they only have 2 per room and bathrooms are definately in the room.
Like LIJ, private rooms are on a first come first serve basis and are I think 300. Also, the delivery rooms are on the small side, enough room for you , your husband and the delivery team. The delivery nurses were incredible. I wasn't too fond of the night nurses once you were in the room, the day nurses were great also...

Re: Is LIJ the same as North Shore University at Manhasset

Check with your doctor about North Shore Manhasset. I know they are discouraging a lot of doctors to not deliver there - only patients in high risk categories.
My SIL delivered my nephew at Northshore in 2003 and when she went to have my other nephew in 2005, she had to deliver in Plainview because her doctor wasn't allowed to deliver in Northshore because of the reasoning above. Unfortunately, my nephew was born a month early with Respiratory Distress Syndrome and Plainview was ill-equipped to handle his care. They moved him to Northshore 24 hours after being born (they released my SIL early) and he improved tenfold within hours.

Do you know why they are doing this? Is it because L & D at NSUH is too crowed?

That was the reasoning. Even my doctor mentioned it once. They are severely overcrowded

When I took the L & D tour last night the nurse manager said that they are trying to minimize overcrowding, I guess this is what they are doing. Thanks for the info.

Every one I know wants to deliver at NSU - their reputation is excellent and their NICU facilities are state of the art.

I delivered there...I LOVED the nurses, but it is a baby factory, tons of people giving birth all day long. I wound up in a four person room (only two of us in there the first day though)

My baby wound up in the NICU because I had a fever while giving birth. She was totally fine, but they had to be safe and give her antibiotics...their NICU is amazing (and sad, but they really can handle anything)

I really liked it overall...except there really was no waiting room for people to wait for the baby to be born...
ETA: I had my own bathroom in my room...and a GREAT shower.

I recently delivered at NSUH Manhasset and I had a 2 person room that was just me for the first night, I didn't get a roommate until late in the day the 2nd night. I didn't find it overly crowded and I loved my experience there.

That was my experience back in 2/05. (And it's also where I was born in 1970!)

Re: Is LIJ the same as North Shore University at Manhasset

I delivered at LIJ on 9/7 and my sister delivered at NSUH on 9/4. I was there when my neice was born and IMO, my L&D room was MUCH nicer--larger, "homey" looking, etc. Unfortunately, I couldn't stay there due to emer. c/s.

I thought the staff was wonderful and although I got a private room, I know the bathrooms are in the rooms because I shared mine with the people on the other side of the wall. While visiting friends there who had given birth, I noticed the bathrooms inside the rooms. Anyhow, I had a terrific experience.

ETA: Mommy2BellaBean...we were there at the same time! Too bad we didn't "know" one another then!

Re: Is LIJ the same as North Shore University at Manhasset

WOW thanks sooooo much everyone!!!

I am deciding between 2 doctors and thought I might take this into account too.

Im going to re-read everyones posts 5000 more times and then make a decision. There really isn't much on reviews of LIJ so this thread helped A LOT.

Thanks again!Chat Icon

Re: Is LIJ the same as North Shore University at Manhasset

I delivered 2 times at north shore manhasset and had 2 WONDERFUL experiences.
I live about 30 minutes away but really do not want to deliver anywhere else...

I have heard good things about LIJ too.. infact.. I have heard from a few doctors that eventually LIJ will be the next north shore manhassett.. that its really becoming as great as manhassett...

I think if you find a great doctor and these were your 2 choices it wouldnt matter much.
Im sure your experience will be wonderful at either place...

I was just thinking about that...we "battled" another woman for the last private room, but she had the baby before us...damn her!

We checked in at 6 pm on 9/7 Chat Icon

I delivered at LIJ and had a great experience. I shared a room with one person and there was a bathroom in the room that we shared with the room next door.

My friend delivered at NSUH and shared a room with 2 other people. I think its just teh luck of the draw which room you get.

Re: Is LIJ the same as North Shore University at Manhasset

I delivered my son at LIJ on Nov. 15. I had a really great experience and felt better knowing they have an awesome NICU, God forbid something was wrong.
I asked for a private room, but wasn't granted it b/c there were about 20 babies born the day my son was bornChat Icon They didn't even have a 2 person room to give me. I ended up ins a 4 person room, but there was one other mom in there with me for a day and half. The last day they brought another mom. We had our own bathroom and shower and I'm pretty sure all rooms are like that b/c I never saw, while walking around, bathrooms anywhere else but in the rooms.

I agree with mommy2bellabean, the only thing I didn't like was that there was no waiting room for my family. They had to wait downstairs in the lobby with everyone else.
