I just got an email from 4 of my college friends and 3 of the 4 of them have children who are autistic...why the sudden explosion in autistic childre?
Does anyone have research in this area? What do you think?

Research points most to genetics... Not environmental
ETA...i don't think that there is an explosion.... Just more diagnosis of it. Autism was highly underdiagnosed for a long time...
How old are the kids?
IMO though a lot of schools have turned focus from gifted to disabilities. Kids in schoools are being tested for a number of different illnesses and disabilities than ever before...
ONtop of that possibly as a result (or vica versa) the fact that drug companies today are surging with new medicine and drugs and are making a gazillion amounts of money
maybe that is the reason?

I agree with Red in that there are more children being diagnosed...
I work with kids with autism and I have heard so many stories of typically developing kids who got shots and got very sick after (high fever, etc.) and never recovered. There is a great book about this but I can't remember the name right now.
It's definitely scary!!

there is definately a surge of kids being tested for disbililites sinc EI have been a teacher- and I have only been for the past 8 years. there are many different levels of autuism.... the "newer" one ia autism spectrum disorder..- aspergers......I have had a few children in my class "diagnosed" with this...

I was just going to mention, as kdelace did, that autism is a spectrum disorder, so children are more likely to be placed somewhere on the spectrum now. There's no one test that can show a child has autism. I also am a firm believer that there are a lot of children who are misdiagnosed with autism.

not sure it is 100% accurate but studies show that childhood vaccines (measles, mumps and rubella) can cause adverse reactions and lead to autism.

YES itis called Pervasive Developmental Disorders which encompasses the entire Autism spectrum
But there are no real tests for any of it... there are cerain behavioral and IQ characters of all disorders... mental disorders are much harder to diagnose that learning disabilities
AND MANY are often misdiangnosed in that they are said to have Autism and they AREN"T!
Like i said...itis difficult

Exactly. I've worked with a lot of children who have been "diagnosed" as having PDD or being somewhere on the spectrum, then turned out they were not at all. Some have other issues, but a lot ended up just being developmentally delayed.

My sister's friend has a son with Autism. She said she ate a lot of tuna fish when she was pregnant. I've read not to eat tuna during child bearing years, but that was the first time I'd actually heard of someone who it affected.

Well, I think this is the same theory as the vaccines. They both contain mercury. But there is little correlation between mercury and the rate of autism. They really do not know enough about it.

i agree that there is just no hardcore evidence corrleating the two but who knows...

Re: I just got an email from 4 of my college friends and 3 of the 4 of them have children who are autistic...why the sudden explosion in autistic childre?
As others have said, it may not be that there is an increase in the incidence of autism, but rather, an increase in diagnosis. There is a wide range of functioning and many diagnoses along the autism spectrum, from autism to aspergers to Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD) to Rett's Syndrome. Within each of these diagnoses alone, there is a wide range of functioning.
I think that the diagnosis of disorders along the autistic spectrum has increased b/c of more awareness and hypervigilance about it. Aspergers in particular has become one of the new "hot" diagnoses, kind of like ADHD. Parents learn about these disorders and are more apt to have their kids seen by a specialist to get a diagnoses. In the past, these children, especially the higher functioning ones, may have just been thought of as being "odd" or having poor social skills.
In regard to environmental factors such as vaccinations and diet, there is no evidence that these things cause autism. There is a great deal of research going on regarding whether thimerserol, a form of mercury causes a role in the development of autism. However, there is currently no proof supporting this. There are a lot of things that may be correlated with autism, but just b/c there is a correlation does not mean that variable A caused variable B.

Also is there a reason that there are more males diagnosed then females?

did you ever wonder that the increase in all this attention stems from money and funding?
and THAT is actually the root of the increase in diagnosis?
just a thought............

yes and the females that are diagnosed are much more severly affected!
again going back to a genetic/biological root

My brother is autistic. Noone knows why this happened to my mom, after all she had me and I was born fine. I do know that while she was pregnant with my brother she did hemorrage and when he was born the umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck and he didnt get enough oxygen.
He is labeled as "high functioning". He is currently in a program with other kids and they go to different jobs every day.

i have heard a lot of talk of this as well...and parents who have elected not to vaccinate their kids because of this have now developed other side effects. i plan to read up on this in the future...
I worked with autistic children for 3 years, and had a mom who swore this was the reason, but this is NOT proven. Everyone will have to vaccinate their child at some point, but you can do the 3 shots separately. I do think there is something linked to some immunity issues, because if you have worked with autistic children, most of them are sick a lot, or have MANY allergies to a lot of things.
