Light Sleepers
What do you do to drown out all the noise in the background? I wake up to almost every little noise (including a car driving down the block). I keep a fan on during the night to help drown out some noise. When I wake up during the night, it is sometimes hard to fall back asleep.
Has anyone used "white noise" in the background?

Re: Light Sleepers
This just started happening to me and every little noise annoys me. I use foam ear plugs in just one ear because I sleep on my side so one ear is already muffled.

I have the same problem...I've tried ear plugs, leaving the fan on etc., but nothing seems to work.

I just deal with it. Anyway, I find that my cats are as big a problem as noise (not often, but once in a while) and if we shut them out of the room I feel guilty.

Ours is an old one, but I think it is Brookstone. It has a bunch of different sounds. We use a rain sound...I love it.

Re: Light Sleepers
I am an extremely light sleeper. I not only sleep with the fan on, but also sleep with a humidifier on- it drowns out the noise very well!

Re: Light Sleepers
When it gets bad, I use disposable foam ear plugs. That usually drowns it out.
I notice I sleep very well in the summer, when I have my AC going.

Re: Light Sleepers
I also need some type of 'white noise' to block out sound, or else I will not sleep (I am a horrible sleeper anyhow..) DH could sleep thru an earthquake!!
Our air purifier actually does a great job of drowning out noise ..
But I have one of those sound machines as well.. I like the sound of the 'ocean' or 'rain/storm' .. so comforting

Re: Light Sleepers
my grandmother finds white noise on the radio and leaves it on.
When I lived alone, I found the sound of a fan helped and if it was cold I'd turn the fan away from me.
I also fall asleep easily with the tv on

Re: Light Sleepers
I recommend a white noise machine. Since December 2004, a baby has been living in the apartment connected to ours. We think the baby is in the area right next to our bedroom wall. We wake up almost every night from the screams, and it hasn't gotten better over the last year. We've done everything to drown out the cries. The fan helped for a little while, but we still woke up in the middle of the night. We finally broke down and bought a white noise machine. There are still nights when we wake up, but usually I get a much better night's sleep than I had before we bought the machine. It takes several days to get used to the noise and to fully adjust to it, but it has definitely helped. I looked up reviews online before I bought the machine. We got the Marpac Sleepmate 980 Soundscreen.

Re: Light Sleepers
Thanks for the info on the white noise machines. I am so concious of having earplugs in so they never help. And I tried the damned sound machines with the forest and the waves and they even kept me up. I'm gonna google the Marpac Sleepmate 980 Soundscreen
Thanks!

Re: Light Sleepers
You know, this is EXACTLY why I'm sleep training my daughter now because I really don't want her to have awful sleep habits like I have. I am the LIGHTEST sleeper and always need some kind of white noise in the background to fall asleep. Hmmmm, I *wonder* how my parents got me to sleep when I was a baby???
